Keeping You Connected

November 2009

Dear :

AWRA has made the big time!  Imagine my surprise as I read the passage below from a recent novel. It's meant to establish the credibility of the environmental lawyer engaged by the main character, and it comes from the most recent novel written by the 1995 winner of the PEN/Faulkner award for his first novel.

"He was a partner at a Seattle firm called Berman Piper with 'extensive experience in civil litigation, land use, and environmental law' and had been named in '98 by Washington Law & Politics magazine, a "Super Lawyer."  There was photograph of a slim, nearly drawn man about 60 wearing a blue blazer and graying at the temples; he was a member of the American Water Resources Association, the Downtown Seattle Association, the Planning Association of Washington, and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties."

For a chance at a rare and beautiful AWRA t-shirt tell me the name of the book that the passage comes from and who the author is.  I will draw one lucky winner from those with correct answers, so please also include your t-shirt size! This is a tough one ... here's one final clue:  the author hails from Seattle where this novel is set.

BTW, if you are not yet a member of AWRA and are looking to establish your own credibility, join today and get the rest of 2009 free.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Terry

Water Resources Information

Atlas of Transboundary Aquifers
The worldwide ISARM (Internationally Shared Aquifer Resources Management) Initiative is an UNESCO and IAH led multi-agency effort aimed at improving the understanding of scientific, socio-economic, legal, institutional and environmental issues related to the management of transboundary aquifers. Since its start in 2000, ISARM has launched a number of global and regional initiatives. More than 200 transboundary aquifers have been identified. Inventories undertaken in the Americas, Asia, Africa, South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Caucasus, and Middle East have been already published separately. This Atlas presents a compilation of available data.  Download it at the link.

GWI Briefing E-Newsletter
In October 2009 Global Water Intelligence launched a weekly e-newsletter called GWI Briefing. The newsletter provides a weekly snapshot of what is going on in the world of water and desalination and is free to those who sign up for it on the Global Water Intelligence website. The newsletter also provides project tracking updates to Global Water Intelligence subscribers.  Click on the link to subscribe.

The Sustainable Society Index was developed by the Sustainable Society Foundation to integrates the most important aspects of sustainability and quality of life of a national society in a simple and transparent way. Consisting of 22 indicators, grouped into 5 categories and using data from public sources, the SSI was initially developed for 150 countries and published in 2006. In 2008 the first of two-yearly updates was published with results for 151 countries for which the SSI could be calculated. The resulting SSI scores on a scale of 0 to 10 allow a quick comparison between countries as is shown on the world map. See how we're doing at the link.

Water Challenge 2030
Charting our water future
is a report of the 2030 Water Resources Group, which was formed in 2008 to contribute new insights to the increasingly critical issue of water resource scarcity. It shows that while meeting competing demands for water will be a considerable challenge, it is entirely possible to close the growing gap between water supply and demand. This report provides greater clarity on the scale of the water challenge and how it can be met in an affordable and sustainable manner. You can download the report and see a brief video about the project at the link.
