Keeping You Connected

September 2009

Dear :

"A taste for irony has kept more hearts from breaking than a sense of humor for it takes irony to appreciate the joke which is on oneself." Jessamyn West

As I sit here on this final day of September, I cannot help but smile at the irony.  I am pulling together this issue of Connections on the last day that I can possibly send you the September issue (and still call it the September issue) ... as I prepare to remind you, dear readers, of the perils of putting things off.

First, for AWRA members:
In recognition of the savings in paper, postage, time, and carbon emissions (not to mention paper cuts) we have been running a special membership renewal offer for AWRA Regular members who renew early and electronically.  Take $10 off your 2010 dues if you renew by TODAY! Yes, today, September 30, 2009.  (Most other membership categories save as well.) More info here. Have a question?  Ask me today.

Second, for those thinking about GIS in the Springtime:
The deadline for abstract submittal for the 2010 AWRA Spring Specialty Conference on GIS & Water Resources is October 9, 2009.  That's next Friday. If you're planning on submitting, why wait? More info here.

These are what I like to call "low-hanging fruit" opportunities.  Easy pickin'.  Grab one today.

Yours in irony,

Terry

Water Resources Information

Water Quality Information Network
The Water Quality Information Network (WQIN) is a collaborative community for the purpose of Exchanging Water Quality Knowledge.  With the exception of discussion lists, there are still limited resources that allow water professionals, researchers, agencies and stakeholders to disseminate other kinds of information that could benefit Water Quality Projects, such as methods, experiences, models, metadata, water quality assessments, opinions and any other relevant knowledge related to the field. In order to promote collaboration, there is a need for more efficient communication tools that will enable information, while keeping it reliable, to be published faster. The Water Quality Knowledge and Information Network was established to promote collaboration, providing an efficient communication tool enabling information to be disseminated faster. Click on the link for more information.

CSIS Report "Enhancing US Leadership on Drinking Water & Sanitation"
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) provides strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers. CSIS conducts research and analysis and develops policy initiatives that look into the future and anticipate change. Their recently released report, "Enhancing US Leadership on Drinking Water and Sanitation:  Opportunities Within Global Health Programs," focuses on the links among water, sanitation, and the health sector and identifies opportunities for greater U.S. engagement on water and sanitation as global health challenges.  Download a copy at the link.

Circle of Blue Waterviews:
Global Survey Shows Water Tops Global Priority List

A comprehensive global public opinion survey on attitudes about fresh water sustainability, management, and conservation finds that people around the world view water issues as the planet's top environmental problem, greater than air pollution, depletion of natural resources, loss of habitat, and climate change. The poll surveyed 1,000 people in each of 15 countries and probed 500 in each of the following countries on specific questions: Canada, China, India, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The results were released on August 18 in Stockholm as part of World Water Week. The independent survey was commissioned by Circle of Blue, the Michigan-based international network of leading journalists, scientists, and communicators and Pacific Institute affiliate focused on global water issues. Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP) supported the research, which was conducted by GlobeScan, a global survey research firm.  View the report and complete results at the link.
