Keeping You Connected
August 2009 |
Dear :
"Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forty percent of all people know that."
- Homer Simpson
Homer's cynicism notwithstanding, we'd like to know what our community of water resources professionals thinks are the most challenging water resources issues facing us in the next decade. The Water Resources IMPACT editorial staff has created a very brief survey on the matter, and we hope you'll take it.
Those who complete the survey can enter to win one of the rare and beautiful AWRA t-shirts. So, take it now!
The results of the survey will be shared during a panel presentation at the AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference, and will also help set the editorial agenda for IMPACT for upcoming issues.
Thanks for participating!

GIS & Water Resources VI
Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel * Orlando, FL
March 29-31, 2010
Submit Abstracts by: October 9, 2009
Recognizing that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a fundamental tool for the analysis, planning, and management of environmental and water resources systems, AWRA launched a series of biennial conferences on this increasingly important topic for water resources professionals. The spring 2010 conference will be the sixth in this series. AWRA's GIS conferences have seen both the breadth and depth of GIS application areas in water resources and the variety of GIS software tools to support such efforts expand dramatically in recent years. This sixth specialty conference will include presentations and topics on a number of exciting new developments and research findings at the intersection of GIS and water resources engineering and sciences. Researchers, practitioners, and students working in this field are encouraged to submit and abstract and plan to attend, keeping in mind that GIS includes commercial or open source software, custom geospatial modeling solutions, virtual worlds, web-based mapping, and more.

Water Resources Information
Tune into this Webcast to learn about WQS, which are the foundation of the water quality-based pollution control program mandated by the CWA. The Webcast will highlight the three major components of state and tribal water quality standards e.g., designated uses, water quality criteria, antidegradation, and will include a case study of how one state is working to strengthen its WQS program. Future Webcasts will highlight other aspects of the CWA including monitoring and assessment, total maximum daily loads, programs for managing point sources and nonpoint sources, and wetland protection.
More information and an archive of other US EPA webcasts are available at the link. Encyclopedia of Life
The Encyclopedia of Life is a new online reference and database which seeks to catalogue all 1.8 million species currently known to science. It plans to stay current by capturing information on newly discovered and formally described species. Each species pages provides information via a consistently structured template. Material on species pages has been authenticated (endorsed) by scientists who are experts on that species. Species pages will become richer as more information is authenticated and added. Information on how to contribute to the Encyclopedia of Life is available at the link.
The National Water-Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) provides an understanding of water-quality conditions; whether conditions are getting better or worse over time; and how natural features and human activities affect those conditions. USGS Public Lecture Series: Science in Action"Baked Alaska: What's Happening to the Glaciers in Alaska?" Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm USGS National Center, Reston, VA
Join USGS scientist Dr. Bruce F. Molnia to explore the relationship between Alaska's glaciers, climate, and sea level. Visit a number of Alaskan landscapes and examine their changes on yearly, decadal, and century time scales. Glaciers are Earth's largest reservoir of freshwater. As they change, so does global sea level. Alaska has one of the largest accumulations of glaciers anywhere on Earth outside of the Polar regions. For most of the past half century, Alaska has experienced a significant increase in temperature that has profoundly impacted its glaciers. Free and open to the public. More information about this as well as past and future free lectures is available at the link. |
