Keeping You Connected

July 2009

Dear :

"No one needs a vacation more than the person who just had one." -- unknown

So, this is especially true if you're going anywhere recommended by a Connections reader!  I have learned about so many wonderful, active vacation spots across the United States (and beyond). I have also learned that when you folks vacation, you do not spend a lot of time sitting back with your feet up.

Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas for my long September weekend.  It was practically impossible to choose from among the regular haunts and surprising selections that you shared with me, but someone had to win, so ...

The winners of my impromptu Water Vacation Contest are

Falls Creek State Park, TN submitted by Leah Tomlinson
Acadia National Park, ME submitted by Lee Carbonneau
Missoula, MT  submitted by Bryce Contor
Wisconsin Dells, WI submitted by Shawn Simpson

Congratulations!

Read more about the contest, and check out virtually all of the entries on the AWRA Water Blog!  Or go straight to the summary.  I've illustrated the 50 or so suggestions with photos of my family vacations, and you can find enough ideas for 20 years worth of fabulous vacations.  If you missed participating last month, you can add your own best water vacation in the comments area.

Thanks for playing!

Terry Meyer

P.S. If you like this audience participation stuff, please take a few minutes a complete this brief survey on the Water Resources Challenges of the Next Decade, sponsored by Water Resources IMPACT.  You can read more about it over in the left column, but I thought it might catch your eye over here, too!

GIS & Water Resources VI
Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel * Orlando, FL
March 29-31, 2010
Submit Abstracts by:  October 9, 2009

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a fundamental tool for the analysis, planning and management of environmental and water resources systems. This Specialty Conference continues the AWRA biennial tradition of surveying the state of knowledge in the field, following the 2004 conference in Nashville, 2006 conference in Houston and 2008 conference in San Mateo. Because of its interdisciplinary approach to water resource opportunities and problems, AWRA provides an excellent professional home for the most comprehensive forum on the application of GIS to water resources engineering and sciences.

Both the breadth and depth of GIS application areas in water resources and the number and variety of GIS software tools to support such efforts have expanded dramatically in recent years. Hence it is expected that this conference will include presentations and topics on a number of exciting new developments and research findings at the intersection of GIS and water resources engineering and sciences. Researchers, practitioners, and students working in this field are encouraged to attend, keeping in mind that GIS includes commercial or open source software, custom geospatial modeling solutions, virtual worlds, web-based mapping, and more!

Water Resources Information

A Chemical Reaction, is a documentary scheduled for release in 2009 (possibly at the Toronto Film Festival) that tells the story of one of the most powerful and effective community initiatives in the history of North America:  Hudson v. Spraytech & ChemLawn in 2000-2001 and what has happened in Canada since that time with regard to bans on lawn chemicals and protecting the environment.  Watch the trailer at the link, then plan to see it in when it reaches the theaters.

 Aquapedia
Aquapedia is a virtual world of reliable, relevant, and readily available water information and wisdom collected and synthesized by users and producers of explicit (water information) and tacit (water wisdom) knowledge. The transformative and collaborative power of AquaPedia will make water a flexible and expandable resource. AquaPedia was developed at Tufts, and the initial content consists of case studies drawn from the Tufts Fall 2008 University Seminar on Water and Diplomacy: Integration of Science, Engineering, and Negotiations.

EPA Water Quality Video Contest Winners
In March 2009 EPA's Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds launched a Water Quality Video Contest to inspire environmental stewardship and educate the public on ways individuals can improve water quality in their community. More than 250 video submissions were received, and the winners were recently announced.  Click on the link to view the winning videos.
