The Media of Water:
Stories of general interest about water and water issues in the media.
This link takes you to a National Geographic photo gallery of endangered freshwater environments, but there are links to other photo galleries on the page. No one does photos better.
Forty years ago the Cuyahoga River actually caught fire when a spark from a train ignited industrial waste on the river. NPR provides an update at the link. |

Keeping You Connected
June 2009 |
Dear :
"A traveler am I and a navigator, and every day I discover a new region within my soul."-- Kahlil Gibran
I think everyone is on vacation this week. Traffic is lighter, the phone is ringing less, even email traffic has slowed a bit.
So, just for fun ...
I'm planning a long weekend get-away in early September, and I need some inspiration. What are your vacation plans this summer? Or, what has been the most unexpectedly good vacation you've taken recently? I'm looking for someplace with water (naturally), that won't be too cold, in the continental US, with plenty of outdoor activities/sightseeing/natural wonders as well as great food.
Best response (as judged by me) gets an AWRA t-shirt.
Send me your ideas (and your t-shirt size) by July 12. I'll share them in the next newsletter.
Thanks for playing!

GIS & Water Resources VI
Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel * Orlando, FL
March 29-31, 2010
Submit Abstracts by: October 9, 2009
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a fundamental tool for the analysis, planning and management of environmental and water resources systems. This Specialty Conference continues the AWRA biennial tradition of surveying the state of knowledge in the field, following the 2004 conference in Nashville, 2006 conference in Houston and 2008 conference in San Mateo. Because of its interdisciplinary approach to water resource opportunities and problems, AWRA provides an excellent professional home for the most comprehensive forum on the application of GIS to water resources engineering and sciences.
Both the breadth and depth of GIS application areas in water resources and the number and variety of GIS software tools to support such efforts have expanded dramatically in recent years. Hence it is expected that this conference will include presentations and topics on a number of exciting new developments and research findings at the intersection of GIS and water resources engineering and sciences. Researchers, practitioners, and students working in this field are encouraged to attend, keeping in mind that GIS includes commercial or open source software, custom geospatial modeling solutions, virtual worlds, web-based mapping, and more! Water Resources Information
The Scientist is conducting its seventh annual "Best Places to Work for Scientists in Academia survey. If you are you a full time scientist permanently employed in an academic, hospital, government, or research organization, The Scientist is conducting a survey of institutions that employ scientists and we would like your opinion of your place of work. This survey is not for postdocs and others in non-permanent positions. The results of the survey will be published in The Scientist, November 2009 issue. Please let your coworkers know about this survey...the more responses we receive the more valuable the results will be.
Survey closes Noon EST, July 3, 2009. Summer of Service
On June 22, the President and his Cabinet officially launched the Summer of Service and encouraged Americans to volunteer for their communities. This newly announced Summer of Service campaign offers an opportunity to promote volunteer monitoring and watershed stewardship and build up your roster of volunteers and raise awareness. Nonprofit organizations with a need for volunteers are encouraged to register at www.serve.gov. USGS Hurricane Website
It's hurricane season again, and the USGS reminds us that its hurricane website highlights important storm information, pictures of coastlines before and after the storm, flood levels, and information on the timing, extent, and magnitude of storm tides. |
