Preliminary Program Coming Soon!

We received an enormous response to the call for abstracts for the 2009 AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference!

The Program Committee will be pulling together the program over the next couple of weeks, and the preliminary program will be posted shortly thereafter.  Watch this space, or bookmark the link and check it often.  Here's what we expect to see happening at the conference:

The 2009 AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference will provide a forum for participants to explore the many multidisciplinary aspects of water resources. In addition to the diverse mix of technical sessions offered at all AWRA conferences, we will focus attention on a broad range of technical, social and legal topics that are of national and international interest, including:
  • conflicts over water and efforts to resolve them
  • recent advances in water resource monitoring
  • modeling and analysis
  • effects and responses to drought, floods, and other natural calamities
  • collaborative efforts to address transboundary and international water issues
Regional topics will highlight efforts to protect and clean up Puget Sound, and address emerging issues on the Columbia River, salmon recovery and stormwater management. Of special interest to AWRA members, the 2009 conference will comprise many special topic sessions, including a presentation and panel discussion of the findings of AWRA's ongoing "Water Resources Concerns in the Next Decade" project, an in-depth survey of AWRA members by IMPACT editors that will elucidate the most important water-related issues facing our country, and identify actions necessary to address them.

Toward a Sustainable and Secure Water Future: A Leadership Role for the U.S. Geological Survey
Toward a Sustainable and Secure Water Future reviews the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Resource Discipline (WRD), one of the nation's foremost water science organizations. This book provides constructive advice to help the WRD meet the nation's water needs over the coming decades. Of interest primarily to the leadership of the USGS WRD, many findings and recommendations also target the USGS leadership and the Department of Interior (DOI), because their support is necessary for the WRD to respond to the water needs of the nation.  You can open the full text at the link, or you can sign in to download a PDF.
The International WaterCentre's full (AU$36,000) and partial tuition Water Leader Scholarships 2010 are now open (www.watercentre.org/education/programs) to study Master of Integrated Water Management in Australia. The program takes a multi-disciplinary, whole-of-water cycle approach. It is a co-badged and co-taught degree by premier Australian universities - The University of Queensland, Griffith University, Monash University and the University of Western Australia.
Applications need to be received by August 1, 2009.

Okay, you don't have much time for this one, but I couldn't resist ...
The EPA, Generations United, the Dance Exchange, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., announce a poetry, essay, photo and dance contest "that best expresses the Sense of Wonder that you feel for the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is beautiful to your eyes." We want you to share this love of nature with a child and others around you. When we teach our eyes and ears and senses to focus on the wonders of nature, we open ourselves to the wonders around us.
