February 2009

Dear :

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Seneca (Roman philosopher)

We have news in this newsletter about the AWRA Spring Specialty Conference (the preliminary program is online), the Annual Conference (the call for abstracts is open), the Fifth World Water Forum (AWRA's sessions are set), and AWRA's awards and nominations (get them in!).

AWRA is, indeed, a place where preparation meets opportunity.  Plan to make your own luck at one of our conferences, at the World Water Forum, or through the AWRA Awards program.

And these days, who doesn't want a little luck coming their way?

The 2009 AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference will provide a forum for participants to explore the many multidisciplinary aspects of water resources. In addition to the diverse mix of technical sessions offered at all AWRA conferences, we will focus attention on a broad range of technical, social and legal topics that are of national and international interest, including:
  • conflicts over water and efforts to resolve them
  • recent advances in water resource monitoring
  • modeling and analysis
  • effects and responses to drought, floods, and other natural calamities
  • collaborative efforts to address transboundary and international water issues
Regional topics will highlight efforts to protect and clean up Puget Sound, and address emerging issues on the Columbia River, salmon recovery and stormwater management. Of special interest to AWRA members, the 2009 conference will comprise many special topic sessions, including a presentation and panel discussion of the findings of AWRA's ongoing "Water Resources Concerns in the Next Decade" project, an in-depth survey of AWRA members by IMPACT editors that will elucidate the most important water-related issues facing our country, and identify actions necessary to address them.
