Anchorage Marriott Downtown * Anchorage, AK
May 4-6, 2009
AWRA has been a leader in the national dialogue on many aspects of climate change and water resources. The U.S. National Assessment on the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change took place in the late 1990's with significant contributions by AWRA and its membership. In 1999, AWRA's Spring Specialty Conference on Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change to Water Resources of the United States was followed by the publication of more than 30 articles in JAWRA.
- What has transpired in the 10 years since the 1999 AWRA conference?
We will have a full agenda covering water resources issues from around the country set in the backdrop of America's frontier, Alaska, during its fiftieth year since statehood. Meeting topics include meeting future water-supply needs, drought and flood co-management, ecosystem impacts, and water-management challenges. Additionally, since the Arctic is a place where change is expected to occur sooner and with greater effect, Alaska will be an ideal place to examine the many changes that are happening locally and effects on meeting the young state's development interests and the nation's energy needs.

2009 AWRA Summer Specialty Conference
Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort * Snowbird UT
June 29-July 1, 2009
Water and natural resources systems are dynamic and, as stewards of these resources, we must continually adapt in order to address evolving issues and conditions such as population growth and migration, urbanization, land and water use changes, and climate variability / change. Our 2006 AWRA Specialty Conference in Missoula was the first of our investigations into this emerging approach to water resources management.
Not sure what Adaptive Management is?
Our 2009 conference will engage the key managers, researchers and "on the ground" practitioners who currently are setting the trends relative to designing and implementing adaptive management programs. The overall goal remains the establishment of a forum where we can learn more about the basis, theories and practical aspects of adaptive management; where we can gain a better perspective about national, regional and local directions, requirements and needs; and where we can share experiences in order to improve our existing programs and to develop more rigorous, credible future adaptive management programs.
In this conference, we will:
-
continue developing a consensus on basic adaptive management terms and concepts, what constitutes a successful adaptive management program and what key "parts" are necessary to implement a successful program.
-
explore the theoretical basis, the legal, policy and socioeconomic drivers and the practical aspects of designing and implementing scientifically-based, but practical "real world" adaptive management programs.
-
examine lessons learned, new/emerging issues and programs, and look for opportunities for interdisciplinary and interagency cooperation and coordination in the adaptive management field.
If you are interested in organizing a special session at the conference, please contact Mark Colosimo, the Program Chair for the Conference.

Water Resources Information
AWRA released the summary results of the Fourth National Water Policy Dialogue, which took place this fall in Washington, DC. The purpose of the September Dialogue was to identify the challenges that would be faced by the incoming Administration and the 111th Congress when they took office in 2009. Available at the link is the summary as well as a copy of the letter sent to the President, all governors, and key leaders in Congress following the 2007 National Water Policy Dialogue.
CJAE Call for Papers for Special Issue on Water in the 21st Century
The editors of the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics plan to publish a "Special Issue on Water in the 21st Century" in December 2010. The issue will include 12-15 state-of-the-art papers relating to economic methods, models, applications and institutions relevant to water issues in different jurisdictions and watersheds. Abstracts of 1-2 pages are due to the managing editor of the CJAE by February 27, 2009. Additional information at the link.
The initial session descriptions for the 5th World Water Forum are now available for viewing on the conference website. In addition, a special earlybird registration rate is in place through December 31.
A number of non-profits along with EPA and the USDA Forest Service have come up with a methodology, similar to LEED for rating a development as "sustainable." The intention is that this initiative will become part of the LEED (leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) process which many of we ecologists have hoped would focus more on the outside of the building (the site) than it does. If SSI catches on like LEED has (now mandatory in many cities and towns) we all will run into it eventually! Please take a moment to check out the draft guidebook, and submit your comments. Comment period closes January 20, 2009. Visit the link above to view the document. Also check out the AWRA Water Blog post on this topic here. |
