2009 AWRA Spring Specialty Conference
Anchorage Marriott Downtown * Anchorage, AK
May 4-6, 2009
AWRA has been a leader in the national dialogue on many aspects of climate change and water resources. The U.S. National Assessment on the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change took place in the late 1990's with significant contributions by AWRA and its membership. In 1999, AWRA's Spring Specialty Conference on Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change to Water Resources of the United States was followed by the publication of more than 30 articles in JAWRA.
What has transpired in the 10 years since the
1999 AWRA conference?
How have the predictions and concerns presented in the assessment of these issues developed?
We will have a full agenda covering water resources issues from around the country set in the backdrop of America's frontier, Alaska, during its fiftieth year since statehood. Meeting topics include meeting future water-supply needs, drought and flood co-management, ecosystem impacts, and water-management challenges. Additionally, since the Arctic is a place where change is expected to occur sooner and with greater effect, Alaska will be an ideal place to examine the many changes that are happening locally and effects on meeting the young state's development interests and the nation's energy needs.

2009 AWRA Summer Specialty Conference
Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort * Snowbird UT
June 29-July 1, 2009
Water and natural resources systems are dynamic and, as stewards of these resources, we must continually adapt in order to address evolving issues and conditions such as population growth and migration, urbanization, land and water use changes, and climate variability / change. Our 2006 AWRA Specialty Conference in Missoula was the first of our investigations into this emerging approach to water resources management.
Our 2009 conference will engage the key managers, researchers and "on the ground" practitioners who currently are setting the trends relative to designing and implementing adaptive management programs. The overall goal remains the establishment of a forum where we can learn more about the basis, theories and practical aspects of adaptive management; where we can gain a better perspective about national, regional and local directions, requirements and needs; and where we can share experiences in order to improve our existing programs and to develop more rigorous, credible future adaptive management programs.
In this conference, we will:
-
continue developing a consensus on basic adaptive management terms and concepts, what constitutes a successful adaptive management program and what key "parts" are necessary to implement a successful program.
-
explore the theoretical basis, the legal, policy and socioeconomic drivers and the practical aspects of designing and implementing scientifically-based, but practical "real world" adaptive management programs.
-
examine lessons learned, new/emerging issues and programs, and look for opportunities for interdisciplinary and interagency cooperation and coordination in the adaptive management field.

Play a Game & Help Water for People
CIGNA and Water for People have teamed up for clean water. Play this fun online game (at the link), learn about your own health choices, and help Water for People all at the same time. For every three questions each player correctly answers, CIGNA will donate clean water for a day to a student in one of five schools in India. (Editor's note: I played it myself for a few minutes this morning, and gave three kids in India water for the day! You might want to bookmark this one.)
AWRA's incoming President-Elect Ari Michelsen will serve as the AWRA representative on the Review Team of the National Committee on Levee Safety. Periodically, the committee will call for comments. If you ware interested in providing comments, please let us know at the above link.
Unsaturated Zone Hydrology for Scientists & Engineers
The first edition of this important resource book was published in 1999, and due to its overwhelming popularity was out of print five years later. The second edition (with significant changes) will be released in 2009. In the meantime, with support from the US Geological Survey and the publisher Prentice Hall, it has been made available for download ~ provided you agree to certain very reasonable restrictions ~ at no charge.
