Our Financials are Available Online!

| Matching Funds | |
A great way to make your contributions go even further is by checking to see if your employer matches charitable donations!
Many companies do! Check with your Accounting or Human Resources department to find out. Typically, you can still request to match funds from donations you made in 2009!
We would be happy to fill out any forms or send any supporting documents that your companies requests.
The East African Center is a 501c3 charitable organization and our EIN # is 91-2161222. If you are a federal employee, you can donate to the EAC through the Combined Federal Campaign. Just indicate our CFC #, 12297, on your enrollment form.

The completion of these buildings will mark the second major step of five steps toward ensuring this community will forever have a quality school for their children. Thank you to Aurelie Paradiso for creating this fantastic rendering!

Intern Update
|
|
In April and May the EAC benefited from the efforts of three interns in Takaungu. Caroline Ruae came through the St. Lawrence Kenya abroad program after spending time in Nairobi and Meru. While in Takaungu she worked on mapping a farm expansion for the current planting season; she helped the Beach Management Unit apply for a grant for a cold store and fish processing room; and she assisted the sewing cooperative in developing better book-keeping practices. Samantha O'Connor and Rebecca Fister are students from Linfield College where they are in their final year of nursing school. They spent a month working with the EAC's health team, spending time with our nurse at the clinic, attending outreach days, and working with the Takaungu Community Unit on community health initiatives. We appreciate their work and continued involvement with the organization and community.

Sustainability Update: Official Opening of the Mavueni Clinic | | On May 12th, together with the Ministry of Health in Kilifi, the EAC officially launched the Mavueni Dispensary.
This dispensary is in the Takaungu-Mavueni cachement area and will make access to healthcare much closer for many residents who previously had to travel to Takaungu for healthcare.
The EAC donated the many of the supplies to make this clinic project possible including a hospital bed, baby and adult scales, an autoclave for sterilizing bandages, chairs, light bulbs, and high security locks.
The opening of this clinic exemplifies the EAC's commitment to local ownership and operation. We are so excited to be able to spread primary care to a new, very deserving, area!

Art & Harmony Recap
| | | On April 11th, 2012, fifty individuals came together to enjoy fine wine from Harmony Vineyards in Stony Brook, NY and an art exhibition of hand selected works from New York artists at this intimate wine tasting & fundraiser. We raised over $6,000 in one wonderful evening!

Thanks to all the artists, David Acker, all who helped, and a huge thank you to Susan Spehar for generously donating her house for the event.

| Update on the EAC | | As the EAC moves closer to local sustainability, there are some internal changes in the US that we will be enacting as well. As part of this transition Emma Nierman will be stepping down as Executive Director. Emma has been operating as the EAC's Executive Director for the past three years and her dedication and leadership, in partnership with Jen and Kate, has been instrumental in ensuring the long-lasting success of the EAC as a sustainable organization. She will not be leaving the organization and instead join our board and contribute 100% of her time to fundraising. We thank Emma for her leadership and dedication to the EAC and its mission and are thrilled to have her join the board!
For the past three years, Emma, Jen, and Kate have dedicated their time to creating systems that will allow the organization to work with less full time employees in the US and more funds being dedicated to programs in Kenya. Emma's staffing transition is a major part of our sustainability strategy as we work towards local increased ownership of the EAC. A new Executive Director will be announced shortly. We thank you for your support and look forward to this new chapter!
Please check your inbox in the coming weeks for the EAC's 2011 Annual Report.
