Matching Funds

A great way to make your contributions go even further is by checking to see if your employer matches charitable donations!

Many companies do! Check with your Accounting or Human Resources department to find out. Typically, you can still request to match funds from donations you made in 2009!

We would be happy to fill out any forms or send any supporting documents that your companies requests.

The East African Center is a 501c3 charitable organization and our EIN # is 91-2161222.

If you are a federal employee, you can donate to the EAC through the Combined Federal Campaign. Just indicate our CFC #, 12297, on your enrollment form.

Our Financials are Now Available Online!

With an annual operating budget of $120,000, we understand that every dollar must have the best possible impact. Please follow this link  to see how the EAC is committed to honesty and efficiciency. We are proud that for every $1 donated, 75 cents goes directly to programming.

Mr. Jeffrey

 February 2012

Dear EAC Community,

Happy 2012. A new year, a new group of Kindergartners, a new Grade 8 classroom and our programs continue to thrive.

Our health services are meeting the needs of a growing community and our Vutakaka students continue to score the best of the region. Our Adult Education program is thriving with 90% of our students women. This year will be our 11th anniversary and we have many exciting events happening in Takaungu and the US!

Our Annual Report is being revised as we speak and we can't wait to share that with you. I hope you enjoy reading about our most recent events, sponsorship opportunities and news below!

If you have any questions, I am always available via email or phone. ASANTE SANA for your continued interest in the community of Takaungu and the EAC!

Clinic Expansion Plan Underway
The new Mavueni health clinic is slated to open by the spring! The Constituency Development Fund has finished construction and the government is anxious to open for operation. This is an exciting example of the EAC's successful partnership with local government and will open up our health services to serve a new region of 10,000 people.

Because of government support for nursing staff and medicines, the EAC will be increasing services with a decreased  operating budget!

We are so excited to keep improving healthcare in Takaungu, and to start working more formally in Mavueni!

Student Spotlight:
Muttaquina Salim

Muttaquina is a student in our inaugural Standard 8 class at Vutakaka Junior School.  She is currently the best performing student in the class, scoring 387 on her back to school exam.

She comes from Takaungu, where she lives with her grandmother.  Her mother works for Mombasa Water and Sewage in Mombasa.  She has 2 older brothers in secondary school.  Her favorite subject at school is Social Studies and she excels on the debate team.  Her favorite sport during games time is Volleyball.  In her free time she likes reading novels and the newspaper.  Keep up the great work Muttaquina!

Community Health

Our Community Health program transformation is complete. We partnered with the government to help them start a new Community Health Unit in Takaungu made up of 50 volunteer Community Health Workers. They just received their registration as a Community-Based Organization, which means they can access grants, loans, and government money to improve their own lives and the health in Takaungu.

Meet Mr. Omar
Mohamed Omar is the newest member of our teaching staff and is already off to a great start. We are especially excited to have Mohamed join our team because he comes from Takaungu and is a valued member of our community.  Mohamed comes from a Vutakaka family - his two cousins attend, and his sister is in Class 8!  Mohamed is teaching Class 2 this year, and his favorite subjects are Math and Science.  He attended Waa Boys High School in the South Coast region, and Islamic Teacher's College in Mombasa.

He has been involved in the health club and the environmental club, and would like so start a Science Club!  His favorite sport is Handball, but he also plays Volleyball and Football with the students.  In his spare time he enjoys reading and exercising.  Welcome Mohamed!

Intern Spotlight - Katie
We welcome Katie Porter back to Seattle after her time with us in Takaungu! Katie has degrees in Public Health and in Law, both from the University of Washington. She was born and raised in Seattle, but spent the last three months in Kenya working with the EAC.

While there, she worked on formalizing the primary school's health curriculum, worked with our newly formed, government managed Community Health team, and tutored the Class 6 and 7 students in Math to help prepare them for their final exams.

In addition to her passion for law and public health, Katie also enjoys signing. She is a board member of the Mirinesse Women's Choir. Thanks Katie for all your hard work!

Intern and Volunteer Opportunities

We are always searching interns and volunteers to join our teams in New York, Seattle and Takaungu!

In Seattle and New York we have opportunities in the areas of grant writing, strategic planning, fundraising and more!

In Kenya you can have the opportunity to work directly with the community we serve in a hands on way! While in the village, you will live with a local family, take lessons in Swahali and experience in the unique coastal culture.  All projects are completed with the support of our Intern Coordinator and our Kenya Program Director.

Please visit our website for more information!

Thank you for staying connected to the EAC and the people of Takaungu! We would love to hear from you! How did you come to know the EAC? What would like to hear from us or see us do?

Thank you for your interest and support!
