Dear Student Sponsor,

Hello, I am Alessandra and I just returned from three weeks at Vutakaka.  I am an abstract painter and wanted to bring the light of artwork into these student's lives in a positive and meaningful way.  I was able to do two painting projects with each of the 10 Vutakaka grades and paint two murals (one abstract and one figurative of the world map) while I was there with acrylic paint (should we put donated by...? here?)

I wanted to focus on the idea of creative expression, allowing the students to paint what they felt instead of a specific picture or thing. The concept of abstract art is a largely subjective idea even for someone who has the context for it, so it was very interesting for me to see what the kids came up with who haven't been exposed to this kind of idea before. I even painted an abstract mural outside and had them watch to see that it is possible no matter how big your ideas or feelings, you could be able to express them in painting.

My goal in continuing to work with the EAC is to be able to develop a curriculum for an art program as an after school club that will focus on smaller lessons in abstract art leading up to more of an understanding of what seems to be a simple everyday fact to us: freedom of expression. Starting with simpler ideas to grasp, such as the color wheel leading to more complex ideas like emotions translated into colors. To be able to give these creative and wonderful students of Vutakaka a creative outlet will not only nurture their minds but their spirits, continuing in the positive direction that this amazing school supports.

I remember growing up as a kid and always having access to art supplies and how that helped my personal and academic education blossom, by having a creative arts club started at Vutakaka I think that the students will more than benefit from what they're able to learn from abstract art in both their home and school lives.
