VJS Student Spotlight:
 6th grader Muttaquina Salim

Muttaquina Salim, Class 6

Our school is called Vutakaka Junior School.  It is located in a village known as Takaungu.  Our school has a spic and span environment.  Pupils are always smartly and colorfully dressed.  The routes which pupils pass through have beautiful flowers planted and these make the school look smart.  The teachers are always kind and fair.

We always go to school earlier than usual.  We get in classes and read before the teacher arrives.  When the teacher comes, he sees the class arranged and pupils reading seriously.  We then go out for collection.  We collect all the garbage until the land is left bare with not even a paper of a sweet left.

After collection, we usually go to class and the teacher calls the register.  We learn a lot and share ideas.  We learn about the world and our country Kenya.  English is the subject which the majority of the pupils like.  They speak well, like Queen Elizabeth.  Our teachers tell us to study hard and use the old adage "look before you leap."

The EAC Partners with the
Rotary Club of Kilifi

The EAC annouKate Rotary Inductionnces a newly formed partnership with the Rotary Club of Kilifi!  EAC-Kenya Program Director Kate Crowley was elected Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Kilifi for the 2010-2011 Rotary year.  The Rotary Club of Kilifi has initiated many wonderful projects in Kilifi District, including secondary school sponsorships and building wells and toilets.  The Rotary club is currently considering a proposal from the EAC to fund land clearing and irrigation on the back three acres of the school property. This will enable the EAC  to begin growing our own food for the school lunch program, a major cost-saving and sustainable initiative for the Vutakaka School.

Working with Rotary International is a natural partnership and we are proud and excited to work with the organization in the future!

World Literacy Day & the EAC
On September 8th, tworld literacy dayhe EAC hosted World Literacy Day for the Kenyan Department of Adult Education under the Ministry of Sports, Gender, and Culture.  Operating one of the largest adult education programs in Takaungu, it was a natural choice to hold the event at the Vutakaka School. More than 90% of our adult students are women who have never received any formal education. These women performed a series of songs and dances for the honored guests, who included the area Councilor, the District Officer, and the Chief and Sub-chiefs of the Takaungu area. Many local children and adults received the message about the importance of education, and the EAC was proud to be a part of this event!

Fight Against HIV/AIDS (NACC Grant)

The EAC recIce breaker at biz training NACC grantently completed a six-month project funded by the National AIDS Control Council to train people living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers in palliative care, psycho-social support, HIV services, and business development. Trainings were held in three locations throughout Takaungu and a total of 71 individuals were trained. The business development sessions focused on creating a savings and loan group as well as strategizing how to start and grow local, viable businesses. A true success story, all participants have decided to continue meeting for psycho-social support and to continue the savings and loan groups.  The EAC is also setting up no-cost initiatives to support these groups going forward.
 Community Health Extension
Worker Training
Based on the success of the Kenyan government's Community Health Strategy, the EAC has decided to shift its Community Health Worker (CHW) program to parallel the government's program. ThisValerian CHEW training decision was based on the goal to increase outreach and coordination with other NGO's and the government.  In Takaungu, four local nurses including the EAC's head nurse, Valerian, participated in a week-long training held in September at a local Kilifi conference center.  The nurses will learn to lead a Community Unit ,consisting of 50-plus CHW's, who will each educate small areas on better health practices.  Partnering with the Ministry of Health and World Vision, this transition is a giant step in strengthening the capacity of local health institutions!
Summer Intern: Kathy, NYC Public School Teacher comes to Takaungu

My name is  Kathy  and I am a teacher in a NYC public school.  I spkathy intern classent 5 weeks this summer teaching a summer camp for 4-7  year old children at the Vutakaka Nursery School.  The children and I had a great time learning together!  We worked on building literacy and math skills through reading games, read-alouds and math games. The children also worked on various art projects that encouraged creativity and  developed crucial fine motor skills.  I also spent the afternoons painting some murals inside the classrooms as well as on the outside wall.

A talented photographer, she took some great shots of the children enjoying class.
