Matching Funds
|
|
A great way to make your contributions go even further is by checking to see if your employer matches charitable donations!
Many companies do! Check with your Accounting or Human Resources department to find out. Typically, you can still request to match funds from donations you made in 2009!
We would be happy to fill out any forms or send any supporting documents that your companies requests.
The East African Center is a 501c3 charitable organization and our EIN # is 91-2161222.
If you are a federal employee, you can donate to the EAC through the Combined Federal Campaign. Just indicate our CFC #, 12297, on your enrollment form.

Dear EAC Community,
I hope you are all having a fun and productive summer! Here at the EAC we have been busy planning our annual Board Meeting in New York, applying for grants, increasing the number of our student sponsors, and of course running our top notch programs in Kenya. EAC staff and students on the ground have viewed pictures and video from May's "An Evening for Africa" and were excited and moved by all of your support. They have asked me to extend a thank you to all of those who made the night possible. The funds raised from that evening have already been transferred and put to use in Takaungu. I hope you can take a moment to catch up on the organization's latest updates in this month's newsletter. If you have any questions, I am always available via email or phone. ASANTE SANA for your continued interest in the community of Takaungu and the EAC! Emma Nierman EAC Executive Director enierman@eastafricancenter.org (425) 681-2459

| Learn more about VJS from 6th grader Ibrahim Ramadhan | | |

"My school is called Vutakaka Junior School. It got it's name from the names of the villages around it. The villages are Vuma, Takaungu, Kanyumbuni, and Kayanda. The name came from the first two letters of each name. Vu came from Vuma, Ta came from Takaungu, Ka came from Kanyumbuni, and Ka from Kayanda.
Teachers, pupils, cooks, and other workers have a good time at Vutakaka. We pupils ourselves are very happy with what the teachers are doing. They are very hard working as we are. Our teachers and pupils are kind, polite, and loving to one another. The school has a playground for soccer, a pitch for basketball and volleyball. There are good players at the school and I am one of them. The groundskeeper's have done a lot. They have planted all kinds of flowers around the school, big trees which give shade, and some vegetables. We pupils always enjoy excitedly as we eat the honey sweet watermelons..." |
| Local Company Funds Clinic! | | Mombasa Maize Miller's has pledged 10,000 Kenyan Shillings a month towards the purchase of prescription medications for the Vutakaka Clinic!
Previously all medicines had been provided by the government, however recently this supply was depleted due to budgetary cutbacks across Kenya. Head Community Health Worker, Mohamed Said, solicited the donation through his father who had worked Mombasa Maize Miller's and is a strong advocate for the Takaungu community.
The company made a one year commitment, and agreed to continue beyond one year if the organization shows good record keeping.
Head Nurse Mshila Malasi has already purchased the first quarter's worth of drugs, and the clinic is now fully stocked and ready for any patient who comes through its gates!
Congratulations to Mohamed and Mshila for the great work!

Soccer uniforms arrive in Takaungu! | |
This week, VJS students are enjoying their first set of soccer uniforms! US board member, Libby Gluck, worked to get the uniforms donated by the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) in Foster City, California.
Studies show that children's participation in after school sports has a positive impact on their education, confidence and social life. They build "values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community". Again, this is the first time VJS students have had a change of clothes to play in.
From the students at San Mateo High School who
collected the uniforms to the Foster City Rotary Club that supported
them and to all those who helped in shipping and carrying the uniforms
from one coast to the other and then from the US to Kenya (including the EAC's newest interns Kathy Spergl and Carrie Petler), many were
involved in providing VJS students with uniforms to play their daily
soccer matches in.
Thank you to all those involved in making this impact! To see more photos check out the VJS School Blog!
