The Week That Was:
Homecoming @ Los Al, And The "Work Hard / Play Hard" Paradigm...
When expectations are high, sometimes it's difficult to deliver. Not @ Los Al, though... This week, so many students and teachers played a hand in making our Homecoming festivities a success, the list is literally too long to mention. What should be mentioned, however, is the fact that "it takes a village" to pull off the kinds of events and experiences for students and staff this last week embodied. From an incredible girls volleyball game and ribbon-cutting for the gym (video of it can be found here: OC Breeze Ribbon Cutting Video), to an amazing Homecoming Assembly and an historic night for Coach Barnes and all of Los Alamitos High School, last week was exemplary of what's so special about our community: We work hard and play hard. And no matter what the endeavor --- a high-stakes exam, or a pressure-packed free throw --- we believe there is much to learn from effort and teamwork in everything that we do. That's what Homecoming is really all about, too... members of the Los Alamitos High School community, past and present, coming together to share memories and gain experiences. And do so collaboratively. And with energy. We work hard and play hard. And there's no doubt that throughout the year we'll do it again. So, thank you to everyone for making this last week special and memorable for all the stakeholders in our community. We played hard, and with vigor, these last seven days... and we'll have plenty to think and reflect on as the work ramps up this month and the challenge of teaching and learning takes center-stage. Great job, everyone!

300.
There's really no other way to title an article that reports on the 34 year compilation of success (33 of them @ Los Al) of Coach, and legend, John Barnes.
The look on his face above says it all.
Some 6,000+ fans and supporters came to Vets stadium last Thursday night to be a part of history and watch Coach Barnes do what's only been done once before in the 100-year history of the CIF. Incredible!
These 300 victories are about so much more than just winning, as School Board Member Diana Hill remarked. Coach Barnes made contributions to the entire community of Los Alamitos by valuing character and integrity, and instilling these traits into each of the young men he interacted with.
And even though he is the "Winningest Coach In O.C.," and one of the most incredible people to walk our campus... most of us talk about Coach Barnes' ability to be a good friend and colleague.
That pretty much says it all... Congrats Coach Barnes!!!

Immediate & Specific: A Glimpse @ Mr. Moellenkamp's Feedback Style
When you click on the video below, you will instantly be taken to Thursday morning, just minutes before the Homecoming Assembly began...You'll see friend & colleague, Mr. Moellenkamp, in "teacher mode" delivering meaningful instruction to some of his highest-achieving students. But that's only part of the story... **(Note: The video above requires access to YouTube)** The other part, the one that concerns this memo, has to do with the outputs, or outcomes, of these students. Choir @ Los Al continually achieves nationally-recognized results, and at the same time serves more than 300 students who are in love with the process of practicing, learning, and performing in choir. In fact, all of our programs are that way. We value the "pursuit" and the "payoff" in everything we do regarding students. That's also what's interesting about watching this video of Mr, Moellenkamp teaching... We get a glimpse into the "pursuit," knowing full-well how sweet the "payoff" was to everyone's ears that morning. Thanks for letting us share, David :)

iHeartLosAl.com website is now live...Encourage Your Students To Participate!
As was announced at the Homecoming Assembly last week, www.iHeartLosAl.com is now live and ready to viewed by all. The website features the video above and explains that Los Alamitos High School is sponsoring a video submission contest that encourages students to demonstrate how & why they "heart" Los Al. Once they make the video, it will be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo with the word "iHeartLosAl" somewhere in he title. And if the submission receives more than 3,200 views by December 31, 2012, winners will be invited to an Awards Ceremony in the PAC in January. There, we'll play the videos for all to see, and more than $1,000 in scholarships and gift cards will be handed out. Encourage your students to apply! It's all about creativity and innovation in 2012. And this is a great way to support both :) Thanks for spreading the love!

Sound Familiar? Listen To The Voices On This Chapter Quiz...
If you like the sound of our Spanish 2 team @ Los Al, make sure you click the video above...
(P.S. you'll need access to YouTube to see/hear everything... so make sure to click this from your home computer.)When you do, what you'll hear are the perfectly-accented voices of our Spanish 2 teachers as students in Ms. Hafer's class take an oral exam. What's striking about this video is not necessarily what you see on tape... rather, one can only imagine the kind of collaboration, time, dedication, and organization that goes into creating ALL of a course's materials. Amazing work Ms. Hafer and our World Languages Department. You all "sound" incredible!

Can You Find The Teacher?
When it comes to "rolling up your sleeves" and truly modeling the kinds of skills and behaviors we want our students to possess... sometimes, there's no better way than actually doing the work ourselves. (Just check out the picture above where Band Director, Tom Plunkett, plays the French Horn in the band @ Homecoming!!!) Or below, where Janine Ball throws on her Letterman Jacket and gets her camera rolling with students from her photography class @ the Homecoming Football Game.
The truth is, this kind of work is so above & beyond the 55 minutes in the classroom we all spend with our kids.
Thanks Mr. Plunkett and Ms. Ball... your efforts, and the fact that you look like you're having a good time doing it, are truly making a difference!
