Superintendent's Visit:
"Griffin Pride is on display everywhere..."

Dr. Sherry Kropp came to Los Al on Thursday and walked classrooms with Mr. Arnold during periods 1, 2, and 3.  Not only did our Superintendent get a chance to visit classes in nearly every department on campus, she was impressed by the collective efforts of all our teachers as a focus on teaching and learning was evident everywhere.

In her email to staff, Dr. Kropp wrote that "she enjoyed watching students participate in iPad lessons, use student response systems to take quizzes, speak in target languages, behave like writers, create ceramic bowls, sing their hearts out, learn about colleges [and more...]"

Thanks to all for everything you do inside your classrooms. Dr. Kropp's observations are proof positive that as we continue to do this work, our students will excel even further in their studies!
We Heart Los Al:
Our Staff Photo Is In!

It's finally here!

If you're interested in getting a copy of this year's Staff Photo for Los Alamitos High School, there are two options by which you can obtain one:

  • Option #1 --  Click the photo above, and download the pic from Los Al's flickr.com PhotoStream for free.
  • Option #2 --- Place an order for a framed 16X20 photo for you to have in your classroom, office, home, or otherwise.  Maureen Motsinger will be handling orders and purchasing, and can be reached at [email protected].  (All orders go through Pictures With Class, the same vendor that took our photo.)
Thanks to all for participating in the group photo this year. The white shirts look great!  And together, it's clear how much we all "heart" Los Al!
ROP Makes Learning Real:
Mr. Chehade Teaches More Than Just Carpentry On 9/11

Like all of us, Mr. Abdel Chehade is more than "just a teacher." For the past 10+ years, he's been serving in the United States Navy protecting this country and learning lessons he passes on to his students.  So, when he had the idea to infuse some of his service knowledge into the Carpentry curriculum he teaches every morning to 3 periods of Los Al students this Tuesday, September 11th... that's exactly what he did!

(In the photo above, Mr. Chehade walks outside with his students and teaches them how to correctly fold a flag. Afterwards, his students designed and began to make their own flags as part of their class.)

One of the things that makes Los Al such an incredible place to work and learn is the fact that there are so many people like Mr. Chehade walking around with amazing stories and wisdom to impart.  Outside learning opportunities occur all the time, here, at Los Al, and Mr. Chehade's efforts are indicative of the kind of "spirit of learning" that makes this place special.

Tie-Dye Day...

Hall Passes
Are Coming!

Last week, in Leadership Council, an effort to start using a uniform template for Hall Passes was brought up.  As of now, students can be seen walking around campus during class time with everything from a wood block 2 X 4 to a toilet seat, as different teachers have come to use different objects for a Hall Pass over the years.

Uniform Hall Passe (they will look like ID cards on lanyards) will be more easily identifiable to Campus Supervisors and more sanitary since they can be placed around one's neck or in one's pocket.

Ms. Miller will be getting these out to Department Chairs over the next week, or so.  So be on the lookout for yours soon!
Warm-Up Activities Are Good: For More Reasons Than One...
Ms. Fox uses a Warm-Up activity to get her Math class started on most days.

Sometimes called an "Into Activity," this strategy for beginning class has multiple functions.  First, it allows students to "get into the mindset" for whatever class they've just stepped in.  (After all, they may have been working with the other side of their brain for the last hour, or so...) Secondly, in the case of Ms. Fox, it provides a perfect time for her to check/stamp homework.  While her students are on task with the Warm-Up, Ms. Fox quickly walks around the room for close, inter-personal interactions with students about math.

There are tons of teachers out there with amazing strategies on display in their classroom, just like Ms. Fox.  If you get a chance, head over to observe a colleague in action... you're bound to learn more about a great practice or two.
