Creativity & Innovation Meet Their Match:
How The Principal's Office Got Marshmallowed!!!

Being creative and innovative in schools for teachers extends far beyond the classroom walls, apparently.  On Friday, September 7th, what must have been a band of creative and innovative Los Al employees (the prank is just too immense for one person, right?) took to decorating Principal Arnold's office with more than 1,000 marshmallows --- some of them in precarious situations.

(Anyone Who Has Information Leading To The Uncovering Of The Person Or Persons Responsible For This, Please Watch The Following Video! JUST CLICK BELOW!!!)

"Truth be told... it was an honor to have been marshmal-lowed so early in my career @ Los Al," Arnold is reported to have said.  Free marshmallows and hilarious book covers will be available in the Principal's office all week long for those interested.

Well played, whoever you are...
Teacher Lunch On The Lawn:
A Huge Success... But What Does It Have To Do With Teaching & Learning?

So many teachers came out for Los Al's first-ever Teacher Lunch On The Lawn, and by all accounts it was a huge success!  But what do lawn chairs, t-shirts, and a few minutes in the sun with kids have anything to do with student achievement, outputs, or learning goals?

EVERYTHING!

There's some research out there that suggests that healthy, collaborative, inclusive, and positive school cultures and climates facilitate teaching and learning in classrooms.  School Culture Reseach... Click Here!

Of course, that's not the only factor that contributes to the success of teachers and students.  And @ Los Al we're fortunate to exist in such a supportive culture, that we can take our students to new heights every year!
Instructional Networking:
Are You IN?

Just a few days old and Instructional Networking @ Los Alamitos High School is already a huge success.  Kathy Currie, Shari Kaulig, Mark Celestin, Mossy Kennedy, Lori Franzen, and Joni Bigley have been hard at work talking to colleagues about visiting classrooms... and now more than 25 teachers have opened their rooms up for visitation!

There's so much to learn from watching a colleague in the midst of their practice.  So, if you haven't gone out to see someone teach (in your department, or otherwise), please contact Kathy Currie (kcurrie@losal.org) to coordinate a visit and even sub out a class if there's something specific you'd like to see.

Instructional Networking is truly an amazing form of real and meaningful professional development.  Not to mention how fun it is to actually learn from each other.

So,there's only question to ask yourself:  Are you IN?

Classroom Environment Makes A BIG Difference...

Art Teacher Karissa Ferrell immerses her AP Art History Students into a world of art every time they step into her class.

In fact, a living timeline of the history of art (from 5,000 B.C. to present day) wraps around all four walls of her room so that there's no mistaking what subject is taught here :)

It's important.  World Lang-uage classes that look and feel like Language classes, or Science rooms equipped with labs and tools all help students to feel connected to the work they're about to engage in.

Lots of teachers have some great strategies on room environment, and if you're interested... just knock on their door, immerse yourself in their classroom, and you'll be sure to leave with a ton of great ideas!
Wordle.net:
You'll Love It!

Try this out when you get a chance...

It's pretty cool.  Basically, Wordle will take all the text you submit in a text box and change the size of the words based on how frequently they're used...

For example, if you asked students to email "what the hardest part about today's lesson was?" You could cut & paste all of their responses into Wordle, and you would be able to see common words, themes, thoughts, and ideas, because they would come out the largest.  Words infrequently used are smaller.

It's a really cool tool for generating and understanding consensus. But don't thank me... Dan Bennett was using this in class last week, and it was a smash hit!
