topGet Out and Vote

With nights occasionally dipping into the 50's it's clear Fall is here.
.
It's also clear elections are almost here! It's always important you vote but this year may be even more so. An exploding debt, a gridlocked congress and looming budget cuts are all on the horizon and don't bode well for Virginia if not properly attended to.

What's your party going to do? Who are you to vote for? All good questions but does the party make your candidate? Or does your candidate make the party? Or both? After you figure out how/where to register (10/15 Deadline!) and where to vote, be sure to read each party's platform  and watch the October debates so you can make an informed choice. This election will make history.

Speaking of history, years after 9/11 we are still chasing bad guys. This month we interview an unlikely chaser, help stock the cellar, promote local artists, and get you out to our national park. With all this and your kids' activities it's a good thing it's easier to get thru Tysons. BTW EZ Pass is changing.
.
Remember to register, enjoy wine with platforms, tour park, buy art and vote for the best candidate!
Village Brief

TD Bank has distributed drawings of the proposed new bank. GFCA will be meeting on the subject on Sept 25 at the Grange. The Village Green's and Wolf Trap's outdoor concerts are over for the season. At Wolf Trap the action just moved indoors to the Barn. Its just 10 minutes away up Rte 7 and their schedule is here. The Hardware store closed.

.

The Town Center's mall is almost done but its trees have yet to be replaced. Speaking of trees, the 2 on Walker and the Pike are coming down. Starbucks offers free wifi with free wsj.com. The Tavern feels new having added a new manager, menu, paint, carpet, live music and NFL Ticket. Siciliano's outdoor patio is done. Brx reopened Mondays with a limited menu.
.
The Brasserie is promoting its new happy hour. The health food pantry Salud celebrated its grand opening. The Village Retreat offered Swedish Massage specials. The new family dentist opens in December. The Rotary is still searching for the outstanding citizen amongst us. Seniors rocked to historical Civil War music at the Dranesville Tavern. Dominion answered its customers questions at the library. And finally, the artists started sprucing up their studios for their annual Studios Tour.

2 More Trees
Walker Rd & Georgetown Pike

The old oak that crashed onto the pike invigorated VDOT efforts to remove 59 dangerous trees from the right of way. The two  large oak trees at Walker and Georgetown have now also been deemed dangerous. Earlier, an old oak adjacent to the one that fell was removed. 62 trees have now been or will be removed.

.
Have the Democrats changed what they once stood for?
The Republicans want in.  What do they stand for? Want to know what direction the parties want to lead the country?  The answers are in the platforms.  The Democratic platform is here. The Republican here. Both are the products of years of efforts and conventions. Keep in mind your candidate may or may not agree with the entire document.

hunterFive Questions ..
("Bad-") Manhunter

Asra Nomani was a colleague of Danny Pearl, the late Wall Street Reporter. Following his murder in 2002 Asra helped catch the killer and went on to expose corruption and terrorist links of several conspirators. Ten years later, she's finally making a home.

Ed: How did you get started reporting?
AN: I moved here from India and always felt out of place, like a foreign correspondent. The Girl Scouts, Casey Kasem's "American Top 40," Christmas, Easter egg hunts, McDonald's were all foreign to me, but, oh, so intriguing. So, I ended up reporting at the Wall Street Journal for 15 years.
.
With Danny's case, I started reporting the day Danny went missing. When I realized we couldn't save him, I dedicated myself to finding out the truth behind his killing. I came to DC in 2007 and started the "Pearl Project", an investigative reporting project at Georgetown. Along with another professor and 32 students I chased every lead.

Ed: You helped nail KSM. How many others?

AN: KSM nailed himself when he bragged of killing Danny with his "blessed right hand". The FBI/CIA used forensic vein analysis to connect him to the murder scene. Our effort connected KSM to his many co-conspirators and facilitators. The final family tree of bad guys: 27 men, mostly Pakistani militants. Only four were ever convicted. Most are still free in Pakistan.

Ed: Does the GITMO flight leave from Andrews?

AN: Yes, it does and it's only 36 miles door-to-door from my house to Andrews Air Force Base for a direct flight to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I went there for the arraignment of KSM and the four "high value detainees," charged with orchestrating the 9/11 attacks. I froze when I caught sight of KSM's "blessed right hand." I am now writing about the experience of being in Guantanamo for the Washingtonian in an upcoming essay on grief, wounds and healing.

2007 Film with Archie Panjabi as Asra Nomani
Ed: Any movie offers yet?
AN: Closest I got was when I got "researched" by Archie Panjabi, a British-Indian actress who got her first Hollywood job, playing me in "A Mighty Heart," which starred Angelina Jolie as Danny's wife, Mariane. She did a really good job being me and she now plays Kalinda Sharma, a saucy investigator in "The Good Wife." She got rich. I'm still working.

Ed: Who is on your radar now?

AN: First, my nine year old and settling into life here at home. I chose to live where I do because, if you can believe it, it's the closest I could find in the DC area to my West Virginia hometown.

My other priority is to keep making that pilgrimage to Guantanamo. As individuals and as a society, I believe that we still have a lot of healing to do post-9/11. We can see that in the recent explosion in Libya, Egypt and elsewhere over a movie trailer perceived as an insult to Muslims. I've a theory that beneath all of the rage-on both sides-are wounds that haven't healed. I'd like to explore the wounds and examine what pathways we can take toward healing. We've got a long way to go.

Join Vince's Wine Club!

(Ed.: Uneditted EXPERT wine advice from the French Ritz Sommelier. Learn when to drink (or store) and how to enjoy wine!)

APERITIF / Amuse Bouche
Secco, Prosecco Rose, Italy, retail $15 at Entyse Wine Shop.

Fantastic and tasty! Rich flavor with a long finish of red berries.

This wine is made with Pinot Noir grape. Why rose? They

ferment the grape with the skin for few hours only (4) the skin

give you the color and flavors. This is why Rose Sparkling wine

is great during reception before dinner!

WHILE COOKING
Barnard & Griffin Rose, Washington, ($16).
This wine is delicious and dangerous! It is very easy to drink as

it is full of berry flavor and very soft. The wine is made with

Sangiovese grape (like Chianti in Tuscany).

SPECIAL OCCASION
Elizabeth Spencer Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa ($42).
This winery knows how to make wine very soft and rich. The

wine has a perfect balance with the fruit, tannin and the

alcohol. It goes well with red meat.

WINE CELLAR
Teso la Monja ''Victorino'' ($67)
Deep  ruby with multiple spice flavors. Sometime wine from

Spain can be very dry even too much. This wine is rich and has

some dry tannin because of this wine need some time to age in

your cellar.

Ed.: You can buy these wines and others at the Entyse Wine Shop at the Ritz Carlton Tysons. To sign up for Vince's Wine Club emails just send him a note.

realReal Estate Report

"Rates on a 30 year mortgage fell to 3.49% which is just unbelieveable" says Roz Drayer. If you haven't refinanced as yet, this would be a really good time. As rates are good and lenders are beginning to lend again, we are now seeing real estate investors come back into the market. This is also reflected by the fact that the market is stabilizing with fewer homeowners going into foreclosure. For more info or help refinancing email.

Athough GF suffered with deflated sales prices for our homes, our market is definitely solid and prices are up more than 8% month on month. At the end of August there were 134 houses for sale in GF with a median list price of just over $2,000,000. The most expensive house sold in August was $2,195,000.
