Dear

Welcome to the Horace Mann League's Notes.

HML Notes are published quarterly as a means of maintaining communications with Horace Mann League members.
HML's Friend of Public Education Award

Jack Jennings, President of the Center for Education Policy, was awarded the 2012 "Friend of Public Education" award.

Jack Jennings led the Center on Education Policy since he founded it 17 years ago, retired Jan. 31.

A former longtime aide to Democrats on the House education committee, Jennings is a legend on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers in both parties singled him out, by name, during hearings to thank him for his expertise. And nearly every version of the Elementary and Secondary Act has his fingerprints on it. He has a Wikipedia-esque knowledge of every corner of the law, but he can explain it in simple terms even a reporter can understand.

The "Friend of Public Education" award is presented annual to an individual or group that promotes public education.

Mr. Jennings spoke on his "Reflections on a Half-Century of School Reform: Why Have We Fallen Short and Where Do We Go From Here?"
