HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF SEATTLE!

2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Assistance League in Seattle.

In honor of its 50 years of service to the community, Governor Gregoire has declared October 2012 "Assistance League of Seattle Month"!
OPERATION SCHOOL BELL (OSB)
Operation School Bell had a record year clothing nearly 1,300 Seattle Public School students.  1,632 volunteer hours were spent with the children plus another 100 hours of stocking and buying of the clothes.

We were open for 68 days from September through February with six emergency days where volunteers stepped up to meet the need.  $98,000 was spent on clothes and backpacks with $14,000 in shoe cards being redeemed.  The cost for each child is approximately $110 for regular clothing and $70 for schools using uniforms.

Thank you to all who gave their time and resources to make OSB such a great benefit to our community.  Special recognition goes to the Family Support Workers from the Seattle Public Schools who partner with us to get needy children to OSB.
Financial Aid for Eduction ENRICHMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ESP)

The Enrichment Scholarship Committee is looking forward to our fourth year of awarding summer scholarships to deserving middle and high school students in the Seattle School District.  Last year we awarded 70 scholarships for a total of $32,000, and this year we are expecting even more applicants.

Our maximum award is $500 and the programs range from Marrowstone Music camp, art and drama camps, outdoor experiences, computer and technology camps and many more pursuits.

Our application packet is on our website beginning in February and is available to all students and school counselors in the district.  These summer experiences can make a world of difference to children and expose them to ideas and activities which can change their lives.

FINANCIAL AID FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM (FAFE)

Financial Aid for Education supports the educational advancement goals of 13-15 students per year at local community colleges.
We currently have ten active students.  Based on current budgets projections, we have room to take on three to four more students starting in spring 2012.

In addition to supporting the students' tuition and book needs, we have been encouraging students to fill some of the need for volunteers at Operation School Bell and the Thrift Store.  Our objective is to heighten student awareness of the organization and plant seeds for future involvement in Assistance League.  So far, we have a couple students volunteering time at the Thrift Store on Saturdays, so we are making progress.

Below are a few recent notes from students:

"I want to thank you very much for having granted this scholarship to me.  It really makes a difference in my life and I cannot be any happier. Thank you."

"I have appreciated so much the opportunity the Assistance League has given me.  As soon as I am on my feet and making money as a nurse, I can't wait to start giving money to the Assistance League to help other people like me!"

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE THRIFT SHOP

Since 1962, The Assistance League Thrift Shop has been a go-to place for bargains on North 45th Street in the Wallingford neighborhood. It is staffed by an all-volunteer crew and is open Tuesday through Saturday. The shop is located in a 1926 Craftsman house, just west of the University of Washington.

We stock adult clothing for both men and women, house wares, linens, jewelry, books, gifts and too many miscellaneous items to list.  All of our stock comes from donations and we return over 85% of the profit to the community

The items have a great turnover and many of our customers come more than once a week to see what is new!  It is a great shopping destination for college students, new apartment dwellers and those who love bargains and collecting.

Periodically we have sales and special promotions, so our customers often go away with many purchases which "were too good to pass up."

MEMBERSHIP

Assistance League of Seattle currently has 95 dues-paying volunteers that keep all our programs and philanthropies moving forward.

We are making a big push in 2012 to increase awareness of our volunteer work to inspire others to join us.  ALS volunteers are asked to work 3-4 hours a month clothing children at Operation School Bell or working a fun shift at the Thrift Shop.  Yearly dues of $60 fortifies your commitment to our work.

There are many areas of potential interest for volunteers, from OSB to fundraising, leadership & administrative tasks.  Volunteers are encouraged to explore their passion in giving back and finding just the right niche that suits their talents.  Interested parties are encouraged to attend our periodic drop-in Open Houses to see OSB and the Thrift Shop first hand, talk to volunteers and learn more about Assistance League of Seattle.  No pressure, just information, and some food & beverage for your soul!
