BASIS Tucson Student Earns 1st Place at NATS Musical Theatre Auditions

Tucson, AZ - On November 5, 2011, BASIS Tucson 8th grade student, Paige Pearcy won first place in the OJW (Junior High) division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Musical Theatre Auditions held at Arizona State University.  Performing Cole Porter's "Easy to Love" and "Some Things are Meant to Be" from Little Women, Paige competed against 40 Arizona students in her division. NATS students commit months in advance to compete in the annual statewide music theatre competition. Each student performed two songs for a panel of three judges who scored them on vocal technique, musical preparation, characterization, repertoire choices and presentation.

"Paige's accomplishments really highlight the well-rounded nature of the BASIS curriculum," says Julia Toews, BASIS Tucson Head of School.  Paige's mother, Mattida Raksanaves credits Paige's accomplishment to the time she spent in the BASIS Oro Valley and BASIS Tucson music and performing arts programs, "BASIS Schools have very strong music and theater programs. Paige was in the 6th grade choir and has performed in BASIS drama classes for the past three years. The drama classes with Ms. Paradis at [BASIS] Oro Valley and Mr. Johnson at [BASIS] Tucson have given her the self-confidence and skills necessary to compete in the NATS event and to perform in a dramatic role with the Arizona Opera company in their 2011-12 presentation of Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci." Paige currently studies singing with PhD. candidate, Ms. Christi Amonson, at the University of Arizona.
Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Sebastian Vempeny teaches Economics in the 8th and 9th grades at BASIS Peoria. He recently completed a successful consumer's surplus experimental project.

During his summer vacation, he visited family and friends, toured Kentucky, Florida and Ohio, and also visited the world's largest dry underground natural cave.

Dr. Vempeny observes that "most of the students at BASIS Peoria come from families that have a tradition of learning and high academic achievement."
Student Spotlight

Ms. Tennaaz Baria shines the student spotlight on all her 5Cs students who helped her clean the school hallways yesterday.

Lauren Pavey of 5K recently submitted her Drawing Project #2 (see image below) from Mrs. Walker's art class to the Original Works fundraiser sponsored by the Boosters.  Students participating choose to have their artwork reproduced onto an assortment of products as keepsakes.

Lauren, however, decided that she would give away her artwork products as gifts to The Butterfly House.  Run by an organization called SWAN (Someone Worth Accepting Now) that helps women who are fleeing domestic violence, The Butterfly House is a three-bedroom house in the Peoria community (about a 10 minute drive from BASIS Peoria) that gives the women the physical, emotional and spiritual support they need.

Lauren's mother Rebecca Pavey encourages anyone at BASIS who is interested in hearing more about this cause to let her know. Parents may contact Mrs. Pavey at 602-790-5105. Parents may also contact the Director and Founder of SWAN, Amilia Duchon-Voyles, by phone at 602-299-5621 or by email at someoneworthacceptingnow@gmail.com. SWAN's web site is someoneworthacceptingnow.org. Lauren, along with her Mom, Dad and three brothers, help do the yard work, sort clothes and help volunteer in lots of little ways at the Butterfly House.
