January 2012 eNewsletter

Greetings!

Happy New Year! We hope this eNews finds you well as we are experiencing near record lows for this time of year!

To warm you up, at least in spirit, this month we are highlighting some of the great programs that we provide at our Clubs throughout the Leech Lake Area.

Our youth have been busy learning and of course, having a ton of fun! Enjoy reading about their adventures and thank you so much for your support!

Taking a Stand Against Diabetes

Making Jello Jigglers at TRAIL
Youth having fun making a healthy snack of Jello Jigglers!

More than one in three Native American children born in or after 2000 will likely be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime, according to the Indian Health Service.

That's why for the past three years we have participated in the "On the T.R.A.I.L. (Together Raising Awareness for Indian Life) to Diabetes Prevention" program - which includes an innovative combination of physical, educational and nutritional activities.

T.R.A.I.L. is a three-month (12 session) program that provides youth with a comprehensive understanding of healthy lifestyles in order to prevent diabetes. The program is presented with four themes: About ME and My Health; Diabetes and Nutrition; Making Smart Food Choices and Sharing Knowledge With Others.

We kicked off our 2012 T.R.A.I.L program at our Cass Lake club in December. Club members have had the opportunity to play icebreaker games to get to know each other, came up with their own rules and expectations to follow, played fun games like the "human knot" and "charades," and have made healthy snacks for each session (like fruit smoothies and ants on a log).

We all have much to learn about how to prevent diabetes and we look forward to helping educate another group of youth this year in the hopes that they will prevent diabetes not only in their own lives, but in those of their loved ones.

S.M.A.R.T (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Girls is a nationally acclaimed prevention program for young girls. The program focuses on decision making and interpersonal skills, self-awareness activities to develop respect for one's own body and the ability to handle feelings and healthy habits, while communicating age-appropriate information about alcohol and other drugs.

We currently have twelve girls at our Deer River club participating in the program.

They have covered several topics, including, learning about Native American leaders past and present, reading "Little Brothers" an Ojibwe story about relationships, food and nutrition, the importance of getting enough sleep and exercise, an online game "Love the Planet" and coming up with ideas on what families and communities can do to conserve energy and keep our lives healthy.

Power Hour = School Success

PH Youth
George took 2nd place for Power Hour in the last quarter of 2011. Congratulations!
Our Power Hour: Making Minutes Count program offers tutoring and homework help
through a reward based program. Power Hour is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members. Club members can earn "Power Dollars" by completing homework, worksheets, reading books or other school assignments.

George, pictured to the right, participated in Power Hour every day he was at the Eagleview Club during the 4th quarter of 2011.

Through his consistent participation in educational activities like math bingo, writing his own stories, reading, creating his own word searches and doing word and math puzzles, George earned 25 Power Dollars, which garnered him the 2nd place award!

Above all else, George loves computers and can always be found helping others in the technology lab with their computer questions. George was also just named the Club Member of the Month for January! Way to go George! We're so proud of you!

Fishing at the Club??

More Legos
Jimmy (age 7) thinking about his next steps.
Sure, why not! We're always looking for fun and unique ways to spark kids' creativity and ingenuity, and this month was no different.

By connecting with our local 4-H Club, Walker Club members again had the opportunity to participate in a LEGO Science Experiment.

The project was to create a fishing pole and fish. It wasn't an easy task, but our youth were up to the challenge.

By working on their masterpieces, Club members had a ton of fun - and didn't even realize they were learning new skills!

They enjoyed it so much, they even forgot to stop for snack and breaks!

$25 Provides 300 Snacks!

In December alone we provided 2,639 snacks to Club youth. Thanks to our partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank, your gift of $25 will provide 300 healthy snacks for our youth this month.

Many of our Club youth depend on our snack programs for what sometimes turns out to be their last meal of the day.
