October 2011 eNewsletter

Greetings!

You know the old saying..."A picture speaks a thousand words." Well, this month we're going to let pictures from around our Clubs show you what your support has been providing for the youth of the Leech Lake Area. (With one exception of course!)

Enjoy and thank you so much for your support!

No Goodbye's, Just See You Later

By Randy Finn, Board Vice-Chair and Founder

Ronna
Ronna served the Club for more than seven years.

As of October 1st, we said "see you later" to our Executive Director extraordinaire, Ronna Treuer. After more than seven years with the Club, Ronna made the long thought-out decision to move back home to Florida.

Ronna was the Walker Unit Director before she became our Executive Director. Her dedication to the kids of the Leech Lake area cannot be overstated. She was tireless in her directing of activities, resources, and staff.

It is sometimes hard to express how we feel. We are sad to see Ronna go, but happy for what this next adventure will bring her and so grateful for the time she gave us.

So how do you say thank you to someone who gave so much of themselves? How do say goodbye and yet let them know they can always come back and have a place and a family here also. In the end we use words, but it is the heart that speaks and knows.

On behalf of the Leech Lake Area and all the kids, from our hearts we wish you well.  We do not however say goodbye, just "giga-wabamin minawa" or until we see you again.

 Insects for Snacks?

Well you know we didn't really feed Club members insects as snacks, but this month Club members have been learning about invertebrates that live in ponds.

They've played games about pollution and then using healthy foods created some insects using their creativeness and taste buds!

At Home at the Club

Sleeping
Recently, the Grandpa of two of our youth came to pick up his granddaughters Janie and Elizabeth. Janie was in the computer room and Elizabeth, well....we couldn't find her! We had thought she was hiding from us to be funny, but as the search continued we found her all curled up fast asleep! It was priceless!

It is good to know that amongst all the activity of the day, she felt at peace and home enough at the Club to let herself fall asleep!

Halloween Fun for Everyone!

Getting homework done and making sure there is daily reading time are always a priority at the Club. But once those are done we have a variety of fun "stations" for the youth to get involved in!  Activities include puzzles, math fun on computers, art projects and much more.

This month we have been making a lot of Halloween decorations to decorate the room with.

Join us on Monday, October 31st at our Cass Lake or Walker Clubs for fun Halloween activities:

  • Cass Lake - Open to the Public for our annual Treats for Tots Event from 4pm-7pm. Lots of candy and fun activities for the whole family
  • Walker Club Open from 3pm-7pm to Club Members and Parents only. Costume contest starting around 4:00pm, caramel apples, fun treats and crafts.

Cozy Areas Encourage Reading

New Reading Area
Our new reading area is a favorite for all Club Members!

Thanks to a recent grant from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, our Cass Lake Club has a new designated reading area. The youth LOVE coming in to this fun area, grabbing one of their new books and settling in for a while.

Club teens love their new space seen below. A fresh coat of paint, new high-top tables and comfortable reading areas are all favorites!
