Mabry Park Tree Planting Mulch

King of the mountain took on a whole new meaning for these cubs and their families. What a great effort from our community!

Not only will the 60 trees planted on the park land help provide a future habitat for wildlife, and a buffer for the adjacent properties, but it provided Cub Scout Pack 471 and other children and their parents a "hands on" way to contribute to the development of the park, and one that will hold lasting meaning and memories.

Learn how it all came about in the story below "Volunteer Spotlight."

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Mabry Park's TREE PLANTING hero!
Stan Herdlein

Stan Herdlein has been a resident of Loch Highland subdivision for almost 20 years, and of Atlanta for more than double that. As a longtime resident of north Cobb County, Stan remembers when Highway 92 was a 2-lane road, and subdivisions were pockets amongst large tracts of farm land - not the other way around. Stan expressed that he misses the open fields, and is concerned about how quickly the remaining farm land is disappearing.

From the first public meeting that he attended at Mountain View Regional Library, Stan was interested in making Mabry Park a reality. From sharing his ideas, to volunteering to help out with community events, public awareness and fundraising, Stan has been an active "Friend of Mabry Park."

From the start, Stan said "if you want to get people involved, get the kids involved" and the parents will join in. And from that, the tree planting idea was born.

Stan worked with staff from Cobb County Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department, along with the administration, parents and children of Garrison Mill Elementary school and Cub Scout Pack 471 to organize the tree planting day.

Mabry Park Tree Planting

The weather held, the trees were planted and mulched, and the event was a huge success thanks to Stan's "can do" attitude in helping to plan and coordinate the event.

Stan is looking forward to sharing more ideas, and he is especially excited about the "tree house" element that is part of the parks conceptual design plan.

Stan is a person who feels that it is "important to give back," and that is evident in his enthusiasm and energy in volunteering his time to transform Mabry Park from a concept to reality for area residents and visitors to enjoy.

Stan took it upon himself to create a permanent banner for use at Mabry Park events. In addition to paying for the banner, he provided coordination between the artwork provider and printer, making numerous trips to make it happen.

And if that weren't enough, he even constructed a custom carrying case for the banner!

Thank you, Stan!
