Hands-On Fun in the Luce Center

"I love this place and getting my art on."

Artist demonstration

A visitor told us this recently before local artist Kristina Bilonick's talk and hands-on screen printing demo. Bilonick talked about why she liked folk art (the use of everyday objects, a sense of storytelling, aesthetic, etc.), and connected it to her work, which often refers to pop culture and memories of her grandmother. She then gave what she called the "cooking class version" on how to silkscreen, briefly demonstrating various steps... until, voilą, a completed screen ready to print appeared. Visitors then got their "art on," printing Bilonick's artistic rendering of the museum's beloved piece Black Hawk Horse Weathervane Pattern. You can see photos from the talk and demo on the Luce Center's Facebook page or on the museum's Flickr page .

Participant's sketchbook

Visitors can also be creative in our weekly Draw & Discover programs. One of the exercises for Draw & Discover this month was to draw the nose and mouth from a figure in the Luce Center. We talked about the basic structure of the features and how they vary from person to person. Mary pointed out how female lips are usually well defined and plump while male lips have a soft outer edge that can be drawn with light shading. After the hour sketching session was complete, we had a wonderful selection of faces and even a cat, because as this participant said, "Cats have noses, too."
