Dean's Update

May 2012

Greetings!

It seems that every day we are bombarded with information about fuel: gas prices, natural gas prices, to drill or not to drill. All that information can be difficult to sort through or be concerned about.

In the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, our faculty members, researchers and students are also concerned about fuel: the renewable kind. They look at fuel in a different way.

This edition of the Dean's Update features work happening on campus to ensure that our fuel consumption is renewable and sustainable, and that it doesn't cause environmental problems. You'll read about our anaerobic digester facility that takes food waste generated in our dining halls and turns it into energy that heats a building. You'll also read about our students in our Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering major whose senior capstone projects give them real-world problems. Their only choice is to come up with real-world answers. You can also read about alumnus Kent Taylor whose work with the Climate Reality project is truly inspiring. David MacFarlane's work in Kenya to help that country determine its carbon credit process to save some of its forests is inspiring people worldwide.

The search for a dean of the college is in its final phase. An extraordinary team of committee members recently hosted four candidates for the position on campus. They have made a recommendation to the provost, who will ultimately make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. You can read more about the dean's search on our website. We will send information on a new dean as soon as we have that information.

Thank you again for taking the time to catch up on what's happening in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Students design solar-powered system

A group of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering students focused their senior project on researching sources for more efficient cleaner energy use in Central America. The students designed and built a small solar-bio-power unit. Their prototype unit will be used as a model to build a pilot facility in Costa Rica. Read more here.

MSU degrees gives alumnus independence, confidence and courage to do what he loves

Kent Taylor, MSU alumnus, credits his MSU degrees with enabling him to have the courage to start his own business, volunteer one day a week, give presentations on climate change and give back to MSU by funding a graduate student working on an agricultural project. Read more here.

Having fun with Sparty

Sparty photo Where's Sparty?

Want to have some fun? We do!

Alumni and friends at the Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources want your help with a "Where's Sparty?" project. For the project, alumni and friends will post photos of themselves with Sparty on the CANR Facebook page. Your participation gives you a chance to win a half gallon of your choice of an MSU Dairy Store ice cream flavor.

To participate:

  1. Contact Kathryn Reed to receive an 11-inch Sparty cutout.
  2. Take your Sparty cut-out to an interesting location and snap a photo.
  3. Upload the photo to the CANR Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MSUcanr. Include a description of where you took Sparty, your name, connection to the college (graduation date, major, faculty member, friend, etc.) to the CANR facebook page. While you're on the page, "like" us.
  4. Mail Sparty to a friend with a note asking him or her to participate in the "Where's Sparty?" project..
  5. Once a quarter, we'll choose a submitted picture as a winner. The person who submitted the winning photo will receive his or her choice of a half gallon of MSU Dairy Store ice cream shipped anywhere in the continental United States.
  6. If we choose your picture as a winner, it will be reposted as the "Picture of the Quarter" with a notice of which flavor of ice cream was sent to you.

MSU converts waste to energy

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees authorized the administration to begin work on a new anaerobic digester system, an approximately $5 million venture that should pay for itself in less than 15 years. The system will re-use waste from MSU's farms and dining halls to create energy for some on-campus buildings.
