Greetings!

Happy February and Happy Valentine's Day!  Be sure to take a moment this month and tell your loved ones that you love them.  It sounds simple enough but often it is too easily forgotten in the chaos of our busy lives.

Make it a goal to tell your loved ones something you admire about them every day.

We hope to see you at a TSA-IL meeting or event soon!

Sincerely,

Tourette Syndrome Association of Illinois (TSA-IL)

Some Lucky TSA-IL Members Meet James Durbin!

James Durbin with Ben Johnson

Rocker James Durbin dazzled judges and received more than 72 million votes last year while on American Idol Season 10

James may have come in 4th place on Idol, but in our books, he's a true winner and inspiration of what you can do when you set goals and remain focused!

James didn't always have it easy.  James' father died from a drug overdose when James was only 9.  A year later he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and Tourette Sydrome.  James was bullied and often felt like an outsider.  He admits he was angry and could have handled many situations better. He tried out for Season 8 of American Idol and didn't make the cut.  Life certainly didn't seem fair to James.

James didn't let his challenges and failures deter him, he kept driving forward.  Now at age 22, James has a 2 year old son, Hunter, a wife - Heidi, finished in 4th place on American Idol Season 10, in addition to earning a Homecoming which is typically reserved for Idol's top three contestants, he has appeared on Late Night with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Conan O'Brien Show (his favorite show), released his first CD - Memories of a Beautiful Disaster - of which he co-wrote five of the songs.  James has worked hard and made his dreams a reality.

Thank you James for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with several TSA-IL members and to share with them they are not alone and they are not defined by their Tourette Syndrome.

TSA-IL on Dialogues with Dan, Rockland
World Radio
Dialogues with Dan

On December 27th our very own Executive Director, Sande Shamash, was interviewed on the Dialogues with Dan show on Rockland World Radio.  Sande and Dan had a dynammic conversation about Tourette Syndrome and provided a lot of wonderful information.
