Brisk Mornings & Snowcapped Mountains!

Winter has arrived in La Plata County - As our thoughts turn to joyful gatherings and festive celebrations, the holiday season always brings upon us a time of reflection and gratitude, a time to gather with family and friends as we count our many blessings.

For our affiliate, with the final touches on our two newest homes, including shoveling some snow that Mother Nature has bestowed upon us with the coming of December, it is that time of year when we are preparing closing documents and winding down our 2011 Build, holding daily drawings in the ReStore all decorated for the Christmas holiday, and preparing to select our newest partner families into the Home Ownership Program.

We would not be able to do the work we do without the continued support of our community. To make a donation to HFHLPC and its programs as a way of sharing your own enthusiasm and appreciation for being able to call La Plata County "home," please click here

On behalf of the HFHLPC Staff and Board of Directors -

Our Warmest Wishes and Many Thanks -

Barbara Blundell

View From The Board - 2011 Retrospective

As we come to the end of another year, we would like to reflect on what we have accomplished. At the beginning of the year, we moved to a larger space in Bodo Park. Our ReStore has a larger showroom, larger back yard sales area and more parking. The number and quality of donations continues to improve, including even brand new items. Unfortunately, sales have been down as customers are still learning about our new location since the move from North Main Avenue, and the economy. For the coming year, we plan to increase advertising and hold special events to showcase our reasonably priced offerings.

We just completed two homes in Fox Farm Village, Bayfield. Since our founding in 1995, we have built 34 homes, serving a total of 106 individuals comprised of 45 adults and 61 children. During this year's build, we purchased goods and services from 45 local businesses, with some businesses donating materials and services as well. The site of our 2011 Build hosted nearly 600 volunteers. We are grateful for such incredible community support.

We celebrated our 13th Annual Wine Tasting Gala & Silent Auction, which wouldn't be possible without the generosity of Sherry Wertz at Liquor World and Peter Marshall at the DoubleTree Hotel. It was a packed house and everyone had smiles; kudo's to the volunteer steering committee and all of our donors who made the event such a success.

But, why do we do this? We firmly believe in the benefits of home ownership. We provide a "hand up" for families in need as a way towards improving the quality  and stability of their lives. We believe our home ownership model works. Partner Families provide sweat equity towards their home, which they are able to obtain at cost with a zero percent mortgage and a mortgage payment no greater than 30% of their monthly income. Through our partnership with the families we serve, we help to improve our community by providing a source of stable housing for those who might otherwise be locked in a transient existence in rental housing.

As we celebrate with our own families and friends, we give thanks for what we have and a prayer for those less fortunate. We can and do make a difference.

We will be looking for you in the coming year, whether a shopper or a donor at the ReStore, a volunteer out at the build site, or at one of our community events.

Happy Holidays! Thank you for your support and God Bless.

 Habitat ReStore

A year has flown by since the ReStore moved to Bodo Park. We are thrilled with our bigger and brighter space. Decorated for the holidays, be sure to come by on Friday, December 10, 2011 to enter a drawing and a chance to win a specially decorated Christmas Tree!

With the cooler temps and new snow, the scrap metal recycling program will be winding down for the season. This program continues to be in great demand as evidenced by the number of items dropped off to be recycled. We are fortunate to be able to provide this valuable service to our community.

And, stay tuned as the ReStore will soon be implementing a paper shredding service.

Frequent Shopper? Have you signed up for the ReStore Frequent Shopper Card? More purchases, more savings!

Volunteering at the ReStore also earns you savings. Volunteers earn "Habitat Bucks" for every hour worked after their first three months. More hours mean more bucks!

Family Services & Education Program

A new Open Enrollment Period for our Habitat Home Ownership Program will begin on February 1, 2012.

The Habitat Home Ownership Program is a self-help program where our local Habitat affiliate provides affordable home ownership opportunities through a partnership program. Providing a stable, long-term home environment, pride of ownership, and the chance to learn new skills and make new friends along the way, the Habitat Home Ownership Program offers a life-changing opportunity that results in a very positive and beneficial experience for our Partner Families. Interested families must attend a Home Ownership Orientation Meeting to begin the Habitat application process. Presenters will outline the program and its eligibility requirements. Attendance is necessary to obtain a Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County housing application.

We welcome all interested persons to attend this first Orientation to understand the Selection Process and Criteria. Children are welcome! Applications will be distributed and explained. For any prior questions, please contact Rachel Taylor at (970) 382-2215. Additional Orientation meetings will be forthcoming at other locations throughout La Plata County.

VolunteerUp!

Our web-based volunteer sign-up program offers those interested in volunteer opportunities with Habitat the chance to review an online calendar and list that includes donating their time to help organize and plan events, as well as the option to sign up for volunteer opportunities at one time, or to sign up a group of friends, family or co-workers.

Many volunteer opportunities exist within our organization, including volunteering in the ReStore, or in our administrative offices, and at future build sites. We welcome all skill sets and offer the opportunity to learn new skills.

Currently, we are looking for core volunteers in the ReStore who might be able to commit a few regular hours a week. ReStore Volunteers earn Habitat Bucks - The more hours volunteered the more bucks!

In 2011, HFHLPC hosted 314 volunteer days - A testament to the continued support and commitment to our mission!

Questions or Ready to sign-up to volunteer? Check out our online calendar or give us a call at (970) 382-2215 to inquire about the many ways in which you can become involved with HFHLPC.
