Summertime!

It's hard to imagine a  more beautiful time of year...though for many of us who call this area home, we've come to appreciate and enjoy the offerings of every season.

Our 2011 Build is well underway as we near the drywall stage. To date, we've hosted more than 500 individual volunteers this summer and 18 groups. We would not be the organization we are without the support of our community, and most telling is how so many of you rally together to help others in need.

Fulfilling the need for affordable housing in our community is a constant reminder to those of us who work and volunteer at HFHLPC that our desire to live in this mountain town stems from our desire to enjoy a certain quality of life - a lifestyle that affords us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and partake in the many cultural events that add to the richness of this area and its history.

For many, working in the service industry or in tourism, putting in long hours at the varied local shops and restaurants, or toiling away on local farms followed by the wide-eyed joy in greeting cheery smiles while showcasing freshly harvested fruits and produce at our lovely Saturday morning Farmers Market means sharing with both fellow residents and vacationers alike just how accessible and welcoming our community truly is in making available to so many all the goods and services that add to the vibrancy of our region.

If you would like to make a donation to HFHLPC and its programs as a way of sharing your own enthusiasm and passion for being able to call La Plata County "home," please click here

On behalf of the HFHLPC Staff and Board of Directors, we want to thank you for your continued support -

With Warmest Wishes and Many Thanks -

Barbara Blundell

ONGOING - The Art Floss Daily Painting Project

365 Days of Paintings launched April 6, 2011, by artist, Kevin Lambson - with his plan to donate at least 25% of the proceeds directly to HFHLPC.  An incredible undertaking, it is one born of collaboration and creativity, a playful spirit, and yes, lots of paint!

Open House Hours:

The Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado puts on its annual Durango Area Parade of Homes event every fall in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County, its Charity Partner.

New this year will be an exhibit by local artists featuring re-purposed items purchased from the Habitat ReStore to inspire their creative endeavors. All submitted artwork will be on display at the various homes entered in this years Parade of Homes event. All pieces must be reflective of this year's POH theme, "Home Under The Stars," because new this year is the opportunity to view the homes during the night hours, lit up by the glow of the evening skies!

For more information or to purchase tickets (valid for multiple days/multiple visits), please visit Durango Parade of Homes or Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County online.

The Contractors' Yard Sale was held on Saturday, June 25, 2011. An annual fundraiser put on by the Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado to benefit HFHLPC, there was lots of excitement and an incredible selection of products at great prices.  Habitat ReStore

The Habitat ReStore continues to thrive with many donations and many purchases, once again exhibiting what a wonderful resource this retail outlet is to our community for both the recycling and the re-purposing of many new and gently used household items such as building materials and supplies, furniture, appliances both big and and small, and antiques.

Oh, and check out our latest ReStore goodies, some gorgeous, solid wood doors in frames still in their original bubble wrap!

1 - 24" pocket door $140
1 - 24" door $150
2 - 28" doors $165 ea
8 - 32" doors $185 ea
3 - 36" doors $225 ea
1 - 74" double door $450

And, remember, Seniors' Discount Days are every Wednesday, all day, 10% off your entire purchase, 60+ ID Required.

The summer scrap metal recycling program continues to flourish, often calling upon the need to keep the recycling dumpster longer than that last week end of the month, and on occasion, requesting a new one to replace the first one that filled up so quickly.

The ReStore continues to seek a few core volunteers, especially during our very busy summer months.  If you have special skills like cashiering or furniture repair, or would just like to help out in the receiving area or prep appliances before they go out on the floor, or want to learn some new skills, please give us a call at (970) 382-9931.

Volunteers earn "Habitat Bucks" for every hour worked after their first three months. Additional days and additional months mean more bucks!

Family Services & Education Program

We have started a new Open Enrollment Period for our Habitat Home Ownership Program.

The Habitat Home Ownership Program is a self-help program where our local Habitat affiliate provides affordable home ownership opportunities through a partnership program. Providing a stable, long-term home environment, pride of ownership, and the chance to learn new skills and make new friends along the way, the Habitat Home Ownership Program offers a life-changing opportunity that results in a very positive and beneficial experience for our Partner Families. Interested families must attend a Home Ownership Orientation Meeting to begin the Habitat application process. Presenters will outline the program and its eligibility requirements. Attendance is necessary to obtain a Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County housing application.

We welcome all interested persons to attend this first Orientation to understand the Selection Process and Criteria. Children are welcome! Applications will be distributed and explained. For any prior questions, please contact Rachel Taylor at (970) 382-2215. Additional Orientation meetings will be forthcoming at other locations throughout La Plata County.

Our next Home Ownership Program Workshop will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011, "Home Buyer Readiness," offered in collaboration with RHA.

VolunteerUp!

Our web-based volunteer sign-up program offers those interested in volunteer opportunities with Habitat the chance to review an online calendar and list that includes donating their time to help organize and plan events, as well as the option to sign up for multiple events at time, or to sign up a group of friends, family or co-workers. Many volunteer opportunities exist with our organization, including volunteering at the build sites, in the ReStore, or in our administrative offices. We welcome all skill sets and offer the opportunity to learn new skills.

In addition to the need for core volunteers in the ReStore who might be able to commit a few regular hours a week, our 2011 Build included Faith Build Month in June.

Our two newest homes are now dried in and ready for drywall. Siding will be next, followed by painting and landscaping - wow!

We've had the support of so many volunteers, including many local businesses and organizations as well, again, a beautiful testament to what a giving community in which we live!

Questions or Ready to sign-up to volunteer? Check out our online calendar or give us a call at (970) 382-2215 to inquire about the many ways in which you can become involved with HFHLPC.
