2013 Tax Uncertainty

Given the state of near paralysis in our bitterly divided congress, it is looking more and more unlikely that legislators will come together to successfully address the issue of 2013 tax rates. As it stands currently, tax laws affecting income, dividends and long-term capital gains, as well as those affecting gifts and estates are set to revert to provisions in effect prior to the tax cuts of 2001.
With both income tax as well as estate tax planning there are planning steps and opportunities that can be considered now to help offset some of the effects of the likely tax increases.
A recent NY Times article stresses the importance of remaining flexible and of planning ahead. As excerpted from the Jan M. Rosen article, "The overarching thought from all the advisers: The outlook beyond this year is murky and may well be affected by who wins control of the White House and Congress, so take advantage of present law, or at least have contingency plans in place to act quickly before year-end."

| South Florida's Claim To Fame?

The Aventura Mall, an exciting attraction for local retailers and shoppers and a not so exciting fact of life for local commuters, has been named the 2nd most visited mall in the entire country. Second only to Minnesota's Mall of the Americas, the Aventura Mall boasts 28 million visitors annually, according to Travel and Leisure Magazine.
It is no wonder Ives Dairy Road needs expanding!

Gordon Gekko, Latest Flip Flopper...
But In A Good Way
The iconic white collar movie criminal Gordon Gekko, has now reversed himself and taken a public stand against greed (Michael Douglas has, that is!).
It appears that the FBI, in its war on financial fraud, recently recruited 250 new forensic accountants, as well as Gordon Gekko, the king of greed himself.
Douglas, approached by the FBI after expressing concern about Gordon Gekko being seen by some as a hero rather than a criminal, taped a Public Service Announcement for which he received no payment.
His bottom line message is one we have often repeated to clients of our firm: If a deal looks too good to be true, it is!

Frye Financial Happenings
Our very own Robin Newman, director of our 401(K)/qualified plan administration division, has given us 2 new reasons to boast about her.
Robin was recently appointed Programs Chair for the local chapter of ASPPA (American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries) and we wish her luck in that role.
In addition, Robin recently received a new designation as an Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent. An "Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent" or "ERPA" is an individual who has been approved by the IRS to practice before the IRS on certain retirement plan issues.
A Tweet Worth Sharing
Austin Frye's local Channel 10 interview regarding retiring in our current economy was picked up by a few affiliated stations across the country and we wanted to share a congratulatory "tweet" he received from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.
