October 2011's Historic Comebacks

October of 2011 will be remembered not only for the incredible comeback  from near elimination by baseball's newly crowned champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, it will also be remembered for an historic comeback on Wall Street.

Historically, October is somewhat cursed for the stock market- the Crash of 1929, Black Monday in 1987, a slow-motion meltdown in 2008. On Oct. 3, both the Dow and the S&P closed at their lows of the year. The market had been through a brutal summer and was one bad day away from falling into bear market territory, down 20 percent from its most recent peak.

This time, the demons made a last gasp, but Wall Street still managed to break the jinx.
Stocks went on to have their best month in almost a decade, rising from their low point of the year in an almost uninterrupted four-week rally. The Dow rose more than 1,000 points, for the month. It gained 9.5 percent, its best showing since October 2002. The Standard & Poor's 500 index, the broadest major market average, rose 10.8 percent for the month, the best since December 1991.

Don't Die In New Jersey!

Not only are there places you may have no desire to live in, there are also places you don't want to die in!

OK, I will go out on a limb and guess that New Jersey is probably not #1 on your Best Places to Retire to list. But, just in case,  keep in mind that Jersey is one of only two states imposing both estate and inheritance taxes, with a resulting combined rate of 54.1%. In second place is Maryland at 50.9%.

Twenty states and the District of Columbia impose estate or inheritance taxes that kick in below the $5 million mark, and some kick in below $1 million. If you live in one of these places, your estate can be exempt from the federal death tax but still exposed to state death taxes. Florida, on the other hand, has neither an estate nor an inheritance tax.

Florida residents do need to be aware that if they own tangible property, such as vacation homes, or boats in other states, their estate can end up owing taxes in those states.

Ranking World Economies
So How Big Is The Economy of Kazakhstan?

world economy

Wondering how different nations rank in terms of their economies?  With so much focus of late on the economies of Greece, Italy, etc.,  we thought you might be interested in other economies and how they rank.

Surprisingly, Kazakhstan ranks #52 out of 183 according to the IMF's ranking.  See how other countries measure up: World Economy Rankings

Miami Marlins Buzz

A new logo is one thing, but the news that The Marlins may actually be in  serious negotiations with a few super star players is sweet music to the ears of  all South Florida baseball fans.

According to the Miami Herald, Marlins owner,  Jeffrey Loria, "confirmed reports that the Marlins have made substantial, competitive offers for the Hall of Fame-bound slugger Albert Pujols and for the all-star shortstop Jose Reyes, two of the grandest - and priciest - prizes of the free agent market. The club also is wooing pitcher Mark Buehrle."

This would be just the injection of excitement  the current moribund local professional sports scene needs.  Read more about the Sweeping Makeover In The Works.
