Highlights of my recent trip to Arizona...
Insights into commerical real estate investing and hanging out with Michael Jordan
Did I get your attention? Ok, so we didn't exactly hang out...A couple of weeks ago, at a conference in the Arizona Biltmore, as I walked through the lobby on my way to the morning business sessions, I heard a familiar voice. I sensed a large presence behind me and sure enough as I turned around I confirmed my suspicion that the familar voice belonged to none other than the world's most famous "Mike." He and his equally tall buddies were gathering before heading out to a pro-am golf tournament.
As I learned on a historical tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired hotel, many celebs have stayed there, including every U.S. president since the time it opened in 1929. The Reagans honeymooned there. Of the many juicy anecdotes we were regaled with on the tour, my favorite was about an unexptected piano performance at the lobby bar one evening in 1988. That particular night when guests in the main building began calling the front desk to complain about the ruckus coming from the bar, they were told to come on down to the lobby. Those who came down were thrilled to find Sammy Davis Junior, Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli in the midst of an impromptu performance at the piano bar!
And here is one more fun Biltmore fact (I could go on!) it was there in 1940, that Irving Berlin, basking poolside, wrote one of the most famous and most recorded songs of all time. Apparently, as he took in the brillant Arizona sunshine, the lyrics, "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas" came to him. At the conference, I was privileged to gain much insight into current opportunities in the commerical real estate investment arena from top national analysts. The focus was on opportunities in solid retail "Power Centers" and mega single tenant (such as Microsoft) occupied buildings. The expectations are that we will see further economic stabilization throughout 2011 which will continue to strengthen commercial real estate fundamentals. _____________________________________________________ | |

The Equivalent of a Million Dollar Asset? Most investors do not realize how critical Social Security is as a part of overall retirement planning. In fact, as I often tell my clients, if planned for correctly, it can produce annual income equivalent to the income generated by a $1 million asset! There are a lot of factors that can affect benefit amount such as timing of election, work income, taxes, spousal benefit options, as well as special provisions. In order to maximize overall lifetime benefits, it behooves one to gain the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions. 74% of those receiving benefits today elected early benefits (Social Security Administration 2009 statistics supplement) and unfortunately, many of them made the wrong decision in doing so from a financial planning standpoint.
