NPR's Backseat Book Club

In early October, All Things Considered resumes NPR's Backseat Book Club, a special segment aimed at young people between the ages of 9 to 14, hosted by Michele Norris. Each month ATC chooses a special book and asks kids to read it and submit questions or comments for the author to backseatbookclub@npr.org. When the author is interviewed, the club members' questions will frame the conversation. They can ask authors where they got their inspiration, why they chose a particular locale, or how they know so much about the topics they write about. The next installment will feature the classic Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell. Author Jane Smiley, who wrote the foreword for the recent Penguin Classics edition, discusses the beloved animal adventure book.

From NPR's Ombudsman: Pulling The Curtain Back On NPR's Election Coverage
Readers and listeners complain about bias in individual segments of NPR's coverage, but Managing Editor David Sweeney says overall balance in the aggregate is what counts. We listened to a morning news meeting to see how the NPR sausage gets made.

Forging A Path Through The World Of Art
The next time you're admiring a painting in a museum, look closely: what appears to be the work of a 19th century American master could be the work of forger Ken Perenyi. Perenyi made millions of dollars over a 30-year forging career, and tells his story in Caveat Emptor: The Secret Life of an American Art Forger.

Vacancies At The Bats Motel

Mother and Child - WUOT Series Oct. 1-3 Delves Into How Painkiller Abuse Affects Lives

Although prescription drug abuse in East Tennessee can be difficult to quantify, experts agree it has reached epidemic proportions. October 1-3, Matt Shafer Powell will explore the ways in which painkiller abuse has affected three different women:

  • Carla is a nurse practitioner from Knoxville involved with a special program at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in which babies who inherit their mothers' dependency on painkillers are guided through the difficult process of withdrawal.
  • Katie is a doctoral student from Johnson City who looks back on her experiences living alone with her mother, a pharmacist who was addicted to some of the same prescription drugs she dispensed to her customers.
  • Tammi is a loving, nurturing mother from Oak Ridge who raised three of her four young boys while high on painkillers.
