FROM THE NATIONAL DESKS

 Thirty-Nine Different Farewells To Arms
Ernest Hemingway once told The Paris Review  that he rewrote the ending of A Farewell To Arms many times. A new edition with an introduction by the author's grandson includes all 39 endings, and provides valuable insight to the author's thought process.

Hey Blackberry, How You Taste So Sweet?
Blackberries are delicious -- and also an invasive species that can turn yards into unkempt, thorny thickets. Deena Prichep shares recipes that can help those who live in blackberry-infested areas use up the surplus, and that the rest of us can enjoy without the effort of pruning.

CPB Funding Again at Risk

On July 18, 2012, the U.S. House Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Labor-HHS spending bill (see page 116 of the linked document), which contains a 25% rescission for FY13 (Oct. 1-Sept. 30, 2012) and a 50% rescission for FY14 for public broadcasting. The subcommittee also seeks to end the two-year advance funding process for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in FY15. The bill now goes to the full House Committee for approval.

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee already has passed its version of the bill, which keeps FY13 and FY14 intact and provides full CPB funding for FY15. Eventually, the House and Senate will have to resolve these differences. We'll keep you posted as things progress.
