WUOT Celebrates a Happy New Year July 1, Thanks to YOU!

One sure sign of summer is that WUOT ends a fiscal year and begins another. FY12 officially ended June 30, and, thanks to generous financial support from our listener-members, underwriters, the University of Tennessee and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, we're VERY thankful to say that the station begins FY13 on solid financial ground.

Membership revenue continues to be the largest source of funding for the station. While underwriting revenue was down over the past FY, growth in membership more than offset the decrease. We don't have final year-end figures, but FY12 membership revenue increased from FY11, which was a record-setting year, so we know we're in a great place! That's thanks to YOU.

Your financial support allows WUOT Public Radio to broadcast a variety of high-quality local, national and international programming on both analog and digital frequencies. Your dollars also make it possible to offer additional programming and services on wuot.org, including internet streaming of both signals and podcasts from "Studio 865" and WUOT's award-winning newsroom.

Thank you SO MUCH for your ongoing support. We look forward to serving you in FY13!

Later This Month on "JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater"

For his uncompromising, serious music, the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival was eager to present Charles Lloyd. He could bring any group, they told him. Charles said he would bring Sangam (means "confluence"), his east-west trio with Zakir Hussain on tablas, Eric Harland on drums, and Lloyd on saxophone. Join three musical spirits, flowing together.

Ricky and AmeliaComing Of Age In Amelia's World: It's A Total Zoo

Only at a Robin Schwartz exhibit would guests like Thistle the rabbit and Brownie the Pomeranian be the center of attention. Schwartz had just given a presentation of her work at the Look3 photo festival. And afterward, well, if you can't imagine what a bunch of photographers and animals crammed into a small gallery space looks like, I'll tell you: a total zoo.

Laws Of Unintended Consequence: A Warning To Policymakers

An all-too-common reaction to a given societal ill is to bellow - with righteous indignation, of course - that "There should be a law against that!" For drug abuse, internet bullying, bigotry, even rudeness, we have become a society conditioned to expect legal solutions to social problems.

East Liverpool, OH was once the "Pottery Capital of the Nation" -- but most of that business moved overseas. One of the last companies in town, though, has a new lease on life thanks to an unexpected large order from Starbucks.
