WUOT's 2012 Looks Bright!

thank you cardWUOT Public Radio begins the New Year in excellent shape, and it's because of YOU!

Thanks to the generous support of listeners and underwriters, the station reached a significant milestone in 2011: For the first time in WUOT's history, community support through membership and underwriting topped the $1 million mark! Our community provided 57% of WUOT's annual budget in 2011.

In addition, many listeners told and continue to tell University of Tennessee officials and their Congressional delegation how important WUOT is to them, which resulted in stable 2011 support from UT (26%) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (9%). Endowment income also was up.

Individuals who included WUOT in their estate planning contributed to WUOT's healthy financial position as 2012 begins. If you'd like to know more about leaving a legacy to WUOT, please e-mail WUOT Director Regina Dean or call (865) 974-1547.

Thank YOU for making the New Year a bright one for this public radio station. We look forward to serving you in 2012!

PROGRAMMING

AIRNOTES- monthly guide to programming

Radiolab_ZoosThis month on "Radiolab" - Zoos

In a cruel trick of evolution, humans can stand just three feet from a ferocious animal and still be perfectly safe. This hour, "Radiolab" goes to the zoo.

What's with our need to get close to "wildness"? We examine where we stand in this paradox--starting with the Romans, and ending in the wilds of Belize, staring into the eyes of a wild jaguar.

WUOT Gives Back, Gets Dirty with Dogwoods!

When Membership Coordinator Lisa Beckman joined WUOT, one of her many tasks was to build the station's volunteer program. And, boy, did she ever: The station now has about 275 volunteers who routinely help out at the station.

But Beckman goes beyond recruiting vols for the station's fund drives and other WUOT tasks; she also coordinates station volunteers and staff to participate in activities outside the station.

Group with Lisa_tree planting 2011Most recently, she gathered a group for the Dogwood Arts Festivals' Bazillion Blooms project. During the spring 2011 fund drive, Cortese Tree Specialists offered to donate 300 trees to the project if enough listeners pledged during WUOT's Community Partnership Day, and WUOT committed to help plant those trees. The partnership was a great success, thanks to our generous and environmentally-conscious listeners!

group_tree_planting_Cindy_textOn Dec. 3, 2011, we headed to sites in Sequoyah Hills and the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum to plant trees. Everyone had a great time beautifying the community that has given the station so much over the years.

WUOT is a part of the community we serve. We do what we do for you and because of you. And we're proud to give back.

If you'd like to learn more about WUOT's Volunteer Program, e-mail Lisa Beckman or call her at (865) 974-9558

Public Broadcasting Receives FY12 Federal Funding

170 million americans for public broadcastingThe question regarding federal funding for public broadcasting has finally been resolved-at least for the foreseeable future!

As calendar year 2011 was nearing its final two weeks, the President and Congress reached agreement on the federal budget for fiscal year (FY) 2012 and an appropriations bill finally became law. The law provides level funding of $445 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's (CPB's) FY14 two-year advance budget.

While this is the third year in a row CPB has received the same appropriation, the fact that it maintained a level-funded, two-year advance appropriation in the face of widespread budget cuts is a big victory. It shows that many in Congress value public broadcasting.

Perhaps even more important than level funding is that the law maintains CPB's two-year advance funding, which is the most important part of the "firewall" that protects public broadcasting's independence.

We are grateful that Congress protected public broadcasting's federal funding, but we really credit this success to YOU. Your efforts-along with those of millions of other Americans who called and emailed Congress to voice their support of public broadcasting-made this possible.

Thanks to all of you who participated in 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting, the collaboration of public radio and television stations, national organizations, producers, listeners and viewers throughout the country in favor of a strong public media in the United States.

Leaf electric carWishful Thinking Vs. Reality: Framing The Future Of Fuel-Efficient Cars
Carmakers have agreed to reach an average fuel efficiency of 55 mpg in 14 years. An NPR series says the challenge will be difficult to meet without changing how Americans drive. Not so, says an expert. How the effort's framed will affect public attitudes. What should NPR's future framing be?
