Pro tips from Golf Director Paul Steward

This month I'm going to focus on trying to help you pick the best ball for your game. There are so many brands of golf balls on the market that sometimes it can be confusing which one will help you play better golf.  All balls these days have solid cores unlike the old wound balls with the "rubber bands" inside. Most balls will have multiple layers or cores to transfer the energy of the club head at impact with a "mantle" or outer layer to give you the type of feel and spin your looking for. Two piece balls, with a core and an outer layer, will normally be harder feeling, but Hotel from the 17th fairwaywill be longer off the tee. Softer feeling "Pro Type" multi layer balls will often not be quite as long as a 2 piece ball (depending on your swing speed) , but will spin better on approach shots and around the green.

L
ower handicap players will normally benefit from the added amount of spin from the softer balls, while mid to higher handicaps see the most benefits from a firmer ball that carries further. All players need to realize that the higher spinning balls will accentuate the miss hits made resulting in more side spin (left or right). The increase in side spin can result in your shots being more "off line" then if you were using a ball that doesn't spin as much. I hope this information helps you to select the ball most suited for your game.

Good golfing to all!!

Hollywood Beach Golf Resort is proud to host another fantastic year for the "Cleveland Group"

The Cleveland Group meets at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort every year, end of February beginning of March.  This is a group of guys from neighborhoods stretching from Arizona, to Chicago, New York and of course Cleveland, Ohio.  A tradition that is about 19 years old, in some cases parents of some of the today's players came here in the early '70's to spend their winters in sunny South Florida.
We have a great group of guys from all walks of life meeting up once of year to enjoy the game of golf, relax and catch-up on life's triumphs.

The struggles between Red Vs. White or White Vs. Red

The fourth annual "Golden Meatball" tournament was held on Feb. 25th and 26th under perfect conditions. This team event uses a "Ryder Cup" style format with 32 players on 2  teams vying for the title. The format for the first round on Saturday was a 2 man best ball for the first 9 and an alternate shot format for the second 9. Day one ended with the White team ahead by 5 points. Day 2's format was a 2 man scramble for the first 9 and medal play for the second 9. The White team continued their strong play and held off the Red teams charge on the final 9 to win by 3 points. Congrats to all players on their fine play in this tough event.

A beautiful Red-Shoulder Hawk was seen here by our own Greens Superintendent, Jeff Sudden.

Jeff knew as soon as he saw the hawk something was not right. The Red- Shoulder's appearance was that of a hurt bird.  His eyes appeared to be swollen shut due to some kind of head trauma; almost like a concussion, he was not moving much and he seemed very lethargic.  Jeff immediately grabbed a towel and was able to wrap the hawk and put him into a cage.  Any animal we find on the course that appears to be injured we do our very best to catch them carefully and take them to the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) in Ft. Lauderdale.  Our results have been phenomenal and most of all the animals have been able to return after seeking medical attention.

Jeff was told the hawk is doing much better and has already been transferred to the limited flight habitat at the WSPA.  We are all hoping with Doctors approval he will be able to return within the month. As to his "mate" here at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort - she is heard from miles.....

These Red-shouldered hawks are scientifically known as Buteo lineatus. During courtship these birds screech in a monotonous "kee-yer" tone. Their scream could be heard from distance of miles. They also call out in a typical whistling sound. These birds have a reputation of being the most vocal ones amongst all types of American hawks.

According to IUCN reports the red-shouldered hawks habitat conditions are absolutely safe and fine adaptive features have preserved the species' existence intact on earth. It is unlikely to get endangered in recent future also.
