Golf tip form Direct of Golf, Paul Steward 'BUNKER PLAY"
For this months tip we will be focusing on bunker play from around the green. For some the bunker shot is the hardest shot they have to hit throughout their round. It should be one of the easiest because you do not have to actually hit the ball, just the sand, to remove the ball from the bunker. A good quality sand wedge with plenty of bounce on the sole is crucial. The bounce on the sole allows the wedge to extract the ball on a "bed" of sand.
For a bunker shot with the ball sitting up the proper technique is a follows:- Establish a firm footing that will support the swing without slipping
- Take an open stance to restrict backswing length and steepen the swing.
- Open the clubface slightly
- Start with the weight favoring the left side at address for the normal shot
- Strike the sand approximately 2-3 inches behind the ball
- Do not let the face of the club close, toe pass the heel, until after impact.
- Continue to accelerate through the ball to a natural finish
I hope this advice helps you to feel more comfortable and confident when faced with this shot. For more help please contact me at the golf shop to scheduled a lesson today. Good Golfing Paul Steward |

What's happening on your course
From December through March is the time for winter projects at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort.
The largest and most time consuming project is edging all of the cart paths. This is a total of 15,861 feet (approximately 3 miles) of asphalt. That is longer than the runway at the Ft. Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport, but then who's counting?
Our other project is the trimming of all the reclinata palm trees. Some of these trees have not been trimmed since my tenure at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort. This is a time consuming job because caution is required. At the base of each frond are very large needle sharp spikes which carry a bit of poison that will cause swelling if stuck. These are just a few of our winter time projects at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort. We hope our patrons and members understand that their satisfaction with our golf course and other offerings to be a priority in the minds of management at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort. Attracting and keeping golfers is the core of our business. |
