From Our Winning Team to Yours

By Kyle Lehne

Recent events have made headlines around the world; from the Royal Wedding of Price William and Kate Middleton, to the demise of Osama bin Laden.  In the United States record storms devastated Alabama, killing approximately 250 people and injuring over a thousand more. Adjacent states of Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas were also impacted, as was Virginia.  Damages are projected to run as high as $5 billion and the loss of life in the five state areas upwards of 400.  Most of the destruction took place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama-home of the University of Alabama and Stillman College.   The dead included six college students.  The path of the tornadoes stretched some 80 miles wide and was classified as an EF-4, with winds reaching 190 mph.  Some neighborhoods were completely obliterated, including over 5,000 buildings in Tuscaloosa alone.

Sun Coast's emergency response team was called on by the private and public sectors alike to provide disaster response fueling services in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas.  Over the past couple of weeks our team has lent support to first responders and businesses in the impacted areas.  I am proud of our dedicated disaster response personnel and their tireless commitment.  I shall never forget the complete destruction we observed and the human tragedy of those who lost loved ones and their homes and businesses.  Moreover, I will never forget the first responders, neighbors and so many other volunteers who jumped in with aid and encouragement.  Through the rubble, I witnessed some very heroic acts of compassion, and heard such optimism from those who lost everything.

As those impacted by the storm and recent flooding in the Memphis area face an uncertain and most difficult future, I am encouraged by the resilience of Americans.  Our country has suffered much over the course of our brief history-as many other nations have--but through it all we seem to pull together during periods of peril.  So let's give thanks for what we have, and who we are as a nation, and say a special prayer for the families affected by the storms.

Warmest regards, Kyle Lehne, VP Sales & Emergency Response

Lubricant Tip:

Mixing Synthetics With Other Oils

What are the consequences and/or benefits of mixing synthetic and non-synthetic oil in an engine crankcase, or any other application such as a gearbox? I have been told that a crankcase can be drained of non-synthetic oil and synthetic oil can be added without flushing any of the prior oil residue."

2011 Hurricane Forecast

The early forecast for 2011 Hurricane Season as predicted by Accu-Weather, a paid weather forecasting service, was released late last week. The numbers are as follows:

  • 15 named storms (meaning the storm has reached Tropical Storm strength)
  • 8 of those will reach Hurricane status (sustained winds in excess of 74 mph)
  • 3 of those will reach Category 3 Strength (considered a major hurricane, sustained winds in excess of 111 mph to 130 mph)

The most noteworthy item was the prediction regarding the timing of the storms. Upper level wind patterns are forecasted to bring potential landfall for the Western Gulf of Mexico (Texas and Louisiana coasts) in the early part of the season, calling for potential landfalls in June and July.
