URGENT ACTION REQUEST:

Help Stop attacks on Prevailing Wage laws!

Union wages and working conditions are under attack by Senator John McCain (R-AZ). McCain offered an amendment that would completely and comprehensively repeal Davis-Bacon prevailing wages from federal law.

Senator McCain's amendment would repeal the 1931 law and more than 70 other Davis-Bacon related Acts, from the highway program to public housing construction.  His amendment would eliminate "Any reference in any law to a wage requirement..." Take action right now to stop the McCain amendment.

The prevailing wage law, the Davis-Bacon Act, requires that contractors on a project with federal support - whether through federal loans, grants, or other types of financing - pay construction craftworkers a wage that is established by the US Department of Labor through a local survey of wages and benefits.

The Davis-Bacon Act ensures that contractors -- who attempt to undercut competitors through wages -- must fairly compete for public works contracts on a level playing field with union contractors. When required to pay prevailing wage, these cheat contractors can't win a public construction project by lowering workers' wages in a never-ending race to the bottom.

As a union member, you have a chance to voice your support for protecting all construction workers' living standards.  Send your Senators an email on this fundamental issue of fairness.

If you have questions, contact Jason McDonald at Torres Consulting and Law Group at (602) 626-8805 or Jason@TheTorresFirm.com

Message to McCain:

I am an Arizona construction worker and I'm writing you to express deep concern about your proposed amendment to S. 782 [amendment #412].  The measure would completely repeal Davis-Bacon Wage Requirements.

Davis Bacon wages encourage the hiring of skilled local workers, providing me and my family with living wages, which in turn helps the state's economy.  As a construction worker, I am dismayed to see you prosing legislation that would eliminate prevailing wages from any federal projects.

Without prevailing wages, tax dollars could be used to undermine my wages and benefits. The Davis-Bacon Act merely protects our community's standards. The protections of the Davis-Bacon Act are critical to me and my family. I live in your state, and build our community's infrastructure.

The best way to remedy the high unemployment in the construction industry is by investing in the nation's public works, not lowering wages for workers.

As our elected official, I expect you to represent the interests of Arizona's working families.

Thank you for your consideration.
