Greetings!
Groundhog day had the world watching Punxsutawney Phil. He saw his shadow, which is to mean six more weeks of winter -- brrrr! History has shown that since this tradition started, in 1887, Phil (or the many Phils over the years) has seen his shadow 99 times, not seen it 16 times and 9 times are not on record. His accuracy depends on the source, and region of the country you are in, but some say he has been correct 100% of the time. No matter the source, it is probably a certainty that he has been correct more often than the weather person. In our continuing effort to keep our colleagues and clients informed and educated, this newsletter is packed with information. Together We're Better. Remember to let us know about your interest in Death Investigation and Injury Causation Seminars. We are planning for 2012 and are accepting sponsors. Be sure and check out 'Death Investigations for Private Investigators' at www.MedicolegalDeathInvestigators.com, a continuing education course at www.PIEducation.com developed by us and based upon our education, training and experience.

Karen's Corner: False Confessions and Accusations (Karen S. Beers, BSW, CCDI) | FALSE CONFESSIONS AND ACCUSATIONS False confessions to most of us seem completely unfathomable. The first question is why would anyone admit to a crime they or a friend etc., did not commit? Only the person making those false confessions or accusations can answer that question, and even they sometimes give the answers "I don't know why I confessed", or "I don't know why I made those accusations". Not everyone has a strong sense of themselves in terms of not giving in to some of the tactics used by trained police officers and interrogators.
What are some experiences, studies and consequences of false confessions and accusations, particularly in death penalty cases? (Karen's Corner continues) This month's puzzle is another Word Search - January's was very popular. The puzzles are at http://puzzles.forensic-investigators.com. Email your puzzle and article ideas to beersks@Forensic-Investigators.com About Karen: | Karen S. Beers BSW, CCDI

ean's Desk Elder Death Investigations (Dean A. Beers, CLI, CCDI) |
Suspicious Deaths Rarely Investigated is the headline of a story featuring James Doberson, MD - a forensic pathologist and the elected Coroner / Medical Examiner for Jefferson County, CO. Dr. Doberson is well known and respected, and he points out some concerns. This also coincides with a similar story, featured below 'In the News' - How to Investigate Coroners and Medical Examiners.
Our agency consults and investigates on deaths and injury causation of all ages - from infants to the elderly, and all circumstances - from accident to homicide to suicide, and even natural. We are affiliated with a forensic pathologist and forensic toxicologist, as well as a nationally accredited toxicology laboratory, to provide a private medicolegal investigation service similar to the coroner and medical examiner systems.
What should funeral homes and body removal services do when faced with family concerns? Learn how can our agency help with this FREE training? (Dean's Desk continues)

The Mid Winter Conference was held in Orlando. It was a great time to see friends and colleagues, and learn tips from the best in the business. This should have been called 'Investigations - A Look Into the Future' as it was a filled with old-fashioned investigations using modern skills and resources, and a peek into the future of investigations. Another highlight was 'Demystifying the CLI', presented by Certified Legal Investigator Committee Chair David Luther, CLI. This was an informative presentation and discussion of the examination process. We hope to see several new CLI applicants in Chicago. Feel free to contact Dean, the Region 6 CLI Committee Representative (MT, WY, CO, NM, AZ, UT & ID - he can answer any questions). Consider attending the annual conference, to be held in June, in Chicago. Details to follow and on the NALI website.

Please see the Legislative Alert and Call to Action issued by NCISS Legislative Chair, Jimmie Mesis: If you are a private investigator or security officer, consider joining NCISS. The introductory membership is $99 for the first year and prorated upon the following year at renewal; regular annual dues are $140); the $25 application fee is waived. US Supreme Court and Law Enforcement Warrantless Exigent Entry Into a Home
In a recent opinion (January 2012) in Ryburn et al. v. Huff, the US Supreme found reaffirmed that law enforcement may enter home, sans warrant, under the reasonableness doctrine of exigent circumstances. Specifically, "...we have instructed that reasonableness must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight" and that "...the calculus of reasonableness must embody allowance for the fact that police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments--in circumstances that are tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving." < continue to full story >
How to Investigate Coroners and Medical Examiners Dean and Karen received extensive training and experience at a coroner/medical examiner office - a unique experience in many respects. This story shares why it is important to understand the differences in the three systems (two are identified - coroner and medical examiner, a third is the hybrid coroner/medical examiner system, such as seen in Colorado). In some states, they have one system, but that is overseen by the county attorney or other elected official (coroner system in Nebraska) or justice of the peace (medical examiner system in Texas), statewide (medical examiner system in New Mexico), or districts (medical examiner system in Florida), and it continues. This article shares why it is important to know the system and those that work in it.

The Quint-Essential Qualities of a Professional Investigator... | Skills Appropriate for the Assignment Law firms and medical offices specialize - Professional Investigators also specialize. Their casework and continuing education should also be in your specialized areas.
Experience and Knowledge Professional Investigators strive to maintain and further these. All professions have requirements of continuing education. The CLI program requires extensive compliance with continuing education.
Responsible and Ethical Conduct Every component of the investigation has evidentiary considerations. Professional Investigators hold themselves to a higher standard and leaves no question as to the admissibility of their evidence. Information without ethics is not evidence.
Effective Communication Professional Investigators maintain communication with the attorney, client, witnesses, and other key persons in the investigation. Moreover, reports are the product of an organized investigation and should reflect the work product you expect.
Keyword - 'Professional' Honesty, Integrity & Intelligence. These define Professional Investigators and gives you the confidence that your case is in competent and skilled hands.
