IMPORTANT NEWS!
You may have noticed our logo and banner change.  In recent months we received dozens of emails about our choice of logo, the overwhelming majority favored a newer and more updated representation of our agency consultation and investigation focus.  This coincided with the decision to change our agency name for the same reasons.  After a great deal of feedback, we have chosen the new logo to coincide with our new agency name of 'Associates in Forensic Investigations'.

Being in business for 24 years has given us a great deal of perspective and experience, and specialized focus.  This rebranding better reflects our growing national footprint as Expert Consultants and Legal Investigators of Personal Injury, Negligence & Death in Civil, Criminal and Probate litigation. Our clients will remain attorneys and investigators representing families and victims of traumatic injuries and death. Visit our updated website at www.DeathCaseReview.comThis change also reflects our affiliation with experts in forensic pathology, forensic toxicology and a neurosurgeon (retired).

We also have new contact phone numbers:
(970) 480-7793 for our main number, and x1 for Dean and x2 for Karen
(970) 480-7794 is our new fax number

We have also completely redesigned our agency website, with updates still being developed.  As one of our specialties is death investigation and injury causation, visit www.DeathCaseReview.com for a look (or use your smart phone and QR code to the right).

Speaking of death investigation, a reminder to our investigator friends and colleagues to check out "Death Investigations for Private Investigators"

A continuing education course at www.PIEducation.com developed by Forensic Investigators of Colorado and based upon the education, training and experience of Dean and Karen.

A Death Penalty Crossword Puzzle and Story...
Surviving Death Row
(Karen S. Beers, BSW, CCDI)
This month's puzzle and answers are at  http://crossword.forensic-investigators.com - are you for or against the death penalty?  Read this story, and check out both this month and next month's crossword puzzles.

How many of you have sat at a banquet or in an auditorium listening to a guest speaker? How many times have you truly listened, watched and were fully engaged while hearing that speaker? I recently heard a speaker while attending the annual conference of the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado (PPIAC). It was during the banquet dinner that the guest speaker began to engage all of us listeners. While many guest speakers at events are "professional" speakers, this gentleman was a unique young man just telling his story.

Before he stood up to talk, he was introduced by a PPIAC member Heather Cohen, who met this young man while waiting for a plane at Denver International Airport (DIA). Heather told how the two began talking, and since Heather is an Investigator, she did what most Investigators do, she asked questions. Heather became fascinated by this young man and she asked him if he would be a guest speaker at the PPIAC conference and he obliged.

Dean's Desk
(Dean A. Beers, CLI, CCDI)
24 years - wow!  And that's not all, Karen and I are also celebrating 20 years together!  Much of it seems like yesteryear.  Over the years we have made many good friends - clients and investigators especially.

Some have asked what is my fondest memory of being in business.  I'm not sure how to answer that, with so many memories - some not so fond of and some you just can't repeat here.  Memories are made with each passing day and if I had to pick just one over the last 24 years, I really couldn't.  There is a collage of memories - from having a pager as the primary method of contacting me, to bringing Karen into the business and adding perspective to the skills and knowledge I already knew she had.  They would include sitting down with clients and colleagues over lunch and dinner, and finally meeting some after 20 years of 'knowing' each other over telephone and email.  Yes, my fondest memories of today are sure to be the same of tomorrow - you, reading this newsletter and knowing together we make a difference in the lives of many.

For personal memories over the last 20 years Karen and I have spent together.  My fondest is certainly first the day we met, which was necessary for the best day of our lives, our wedding day.  Together we have shared, made and lived more memories than I would have thought possible.  Together we are already making memories for tomorrow.  When you think about it, 20 years is not that long and I'm certainly ready to add to the book of memories!

MARK FEEGEL, FELLOW CLI AND COLLEAGUE, SAVES TWO CHILDREN FROM ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Private investigators often get a bad rap.  In popular television shows and movies they're often portrayed as seedy unscrupulous spies hiding in the bushes trying to snap a few compromising photos of philandering spouses. In the news recently the News of the World phone hacking scandal has made a lot of noise about unethical investigators breaking into the voicemail of murder victims and family members of those who died in terrorist attacks. Just a month ago Contra Costa private investigator, Christopher Butler, and the commander of the Contra Costa County Narcotics Enforcement Team made national headlines. They were indicted by a federal Grand Jury for allegedly arranging stings to steal drug evidence with the intention to sell the confiscated drug and operating a massage parlor in Pleasant Hill, CA where they targeted competing brothels and protected prostitutes in exchange for weekly payments.

Five Qualities of a Professional Investigator...
Certified Legal InvestigatorSkills Appropriate for the Assignment
Law firms and medical offices specialize - Professional Investigators also specialize.  Their casework and continuing education should also be in your specialized areas.

Experience and Knowledge
Professional Investigators strive to maintain and further these. All professions have requirements of continuing education.  The CLI program requires extensive compliance with continuing education.

Responsible and Ethical Conduct
Every component of the investigation has evidentiary considerations. Professional Investigators hold themselves to a higher standard and leaves no question as to the admissibility of their evidence.  Information without ethics is not evidence.

Effective Communication
Professional Investigators maintain communication with the attorney, client, witnesses, and other key persons in the investigation.  Moreover, reports are the product of an organized investigation and should reflect the work product you expect.

Keyword - 'Professional'
Honesty, Integrity & Intelligence.  These define Professional Investigators and gives you the confidence that your case is in competent and skilled hands.
