Horse Quiz Bowl and Hippology Contest
The Cheshire County Horse Leaders Association sponsored the Cheshire County Horse Contest on January 8, 2011. This contest is a qualifying event for the NH State Quiz Bowl Contest that was held on January 29th in Belmont NH. 21youth from Cheshire County 4-H Horse Clubs competed. Novice, Junior and Senior members took a written quiz on horse knowledge, competed in a team quiz bowl event, worked through solving an effort problem, demonstrated hands on knowledge with Hippology Stations, and used their critical thinking skills in the Horse Judging portion of the event. Participants were: Lydia Hurley, Clara Lane, Nicholas Shephard, Connor Greenwood, Sage Tourigny, Leah Varney, Anna Cook, Hannah Stanley, Olivia Stanley, Elizabeth Morris, Deanna Maxfield, Ashley Crowell, Emma Kelley, Laura Dunbar, Hanna Sethi, Owen Greenwood, Elizabeth Enzler, Paige Ricci, Hannah LaBarre, and Margaret Thomas.
Members who qualified for the State Quiz Bowl Contest included: Junior members - Elizabeth Morris, Connor Greenwood (Minis Too!), Anna Cook (Swanzey Saddles) and Nicholas Shepherd (Ultimate Equestrians); Senior Members - Leah Varney (Mini's Too!), Clara Lane and Sage Tourigney (Ultimate Equestrians), Ashley Crowell (Abenaquis).

4-H Volunteer eLearning Course is designed to acquaint you with basic volunteer information. The course is divided into 4 modules and each module takes approximately 20 minutes. Modules can be completed at different times. Topics include: "About 4-H", "Positive Youth Development", "Getting Started in 4-H", "Leadership & Teaching". Here is what volunteers are saying about the course:

 State Quiz Bowl Contest
January 29th was a successful day for Cheshire County's Junior and Senior Horse Bowl teams. Members from Minis Too!, Ultimate Equestrians, Abenaquis, and Swanzey Saddles represented Cheshire County at the State Horse Bowl Contest held in Belmont, NH. The junior team made up of Lizzie Morris and Connor Greenwood of Minis Too!, Nicholas Shephard of Ultimate Equestrians, and Anna Cook of Swanzey Saddles finished the day with a well-deserved second place. Lizzie Morris of Minis Too! placed first individually. Great job junior team!
The senior team made up of Clara Lane and Sage Tourigny of Ultimate Equestrians, Ashley Crowell of Abenaquis, and Michaela Kirby an alternate from Rockingham County finished the day with a hard earned second place. Clara Lane, Ultimate Equestrians, came first individually and qualified to study for the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup to be held in Louisville, KY in November. Great job and Congratulations to all of the members who represented Cheshire County at the State Horse Bowl Contest.

Cheshire County 4-H Clubs Host
4-H Animal Science Bonanza at Keene State College
4-H Members and Volunteer Leaders from several 4-H Clubs in Cheshire County organized the 4-H Animal Science Bonanza on January 29. Fifty-six youth from across New Hampshire and 21 4-H volunteers participated in a day of activities that included: Team Building Activities, Skill-a-thon Stations that covered topics in beef, sheep and dairy, and a Beef Quiz Bowl Contest.
After a welcoming ceremony led by members from the Switch'n Horns and Pitcher Mountain 4-H Clubs youth were able to participate in skill building activities in a variety of project areas that included making rope halters for cattle, identifying equipment that is used in sheep and wool production and dairy science. Some of the skill-a-thon stations were designed and taught by 4-H members. The youth were also able to participate in a quiz bowl contest that focused on beef cattle production.
Youth were invited to attend mini workshops on hay quality led by Carl Majewski, UNH Cooperative Extension Agriculture Resources, Agriculture in the Classroom-Jozi Best from NH Farm Bureau, Keith Avent, of Tractor Supply, led a workshop on Feeds and Gregory Clark, Jr., 4-H Volunteer, and Andrea Sawyer, UNH Cooperative Extension, 4-H, led a workshop on dairy judging.

Barry Conservation Camp is a great program for kids who love the outdoors, enjoy hands-on learning in environmental and conservation programs and can benefit from participating in a

small camp.
The staff takes pride in creating a special place where kids can discover their individual strengths. Campers and staff work together as a team in the hope that everyone leaves camp with a greater awareness of themselves and the world around them.

The New England 4-H Horse Program Committee is pleased to announce its 3rd 4-H Horse Judge's School.

2011 Teen Conference; "Take a Chance"
will be held June 26-29 at UNH Durham. Council has been planning fun new workshops along with the classic favorites. Some highlights will include shooting sports, fencing, a visit to Monkey Trunks
Ropes Course, ballroom dancing, fly fishing, video production, and print making. This conference will feature an opening night costume ball, a trip to Hampton Beach for a BBQ, and a closing dance complete with light show! The cost will be between $220-$230 for the entire 4 days. Room, Meals, Activities and T-Shirt are included (some workshops carry an additional fee). Scholarships available.
Open to youth age 14 at time of conference or completing 8th grade.

4-H Member Notes.....
Saturday, January 29th Anna Cook, Nick Shepard, Connor Greenwood, and Lizzie Morris competed in Belmont at the NH State Horse Quiz Bowl Contest. We had tons of fun in the five rounds we competed in. We ended up coming in second out of six teams. Captain, Lizzie, came in first individually. After the contest both the junior and half of the senior team went to the Tilton Diner for a supper. All in all it was a awesome day. (Lizzie)
