Human Race Update
Walkers, Runners, and Supporters,
We are a little more than a week away from the annual Human Race on May 12, 2012. For those of you that are participating, you can meet at the Building for Generations table at 8AM, 2300 Delaware Street, Santa Cruz. For those of you just interested in making a contribution, you can go to www.humanracesc.org Team:Building for Generations 421.
This has always been a fun event and it can't get much more beautiful than West Cliff Drive for a walk.
This year, all proceeds will go to support our local music program here in Santa Cruz. We are in partnership with Lizz Anderson, regional director of Music Together to bring an experiential music program to four classrooms for children with developmental disabilities. For $5 a child receives a music class and for $50. a 10 week session for one child is completely paid for. We have conducted the program for the past year and it has been overwhelmingly received by both students and teachers. Music is one of the few activities that engages the whole brain and therefore greatly benefits this population.
One of the teachers told me that she had great difficulty teaching a student how to spell his name. He could however, sing and remember the scale. Using these notes with the letters of his name he was able to accomplish the task. Now, this student can silently recall the scale and spell his name. All of you are probably familiar with singers who stutter but can sing without stuttering. This is yet another result of whole brain engagement. The enrichment that music brings is well documented but beyond that is simply the joy of music that we all know. Thanks for your contribution toward our goal of $4000. for the 2012/2013 school year. |

Happy Mother's Day
To all of you mom's out there. When Emmanuel Ofosu was recently our speaker here, he made a moving tribute to mothers when he spoke about his mother carrying him for 13 years to school. Had she not done this, perhaps he would never have made the difference in so many people lives that he has. He ended it by saying that is why we have a "Big celebration for Mother's Day." So celebrate yourselves for going that extra mile!!
