| Special People/Our Volunteers
She has sung at all our parties, hung out at rummage sales, and showed up with her daughters in a wheelchair
at the Human Race! Juana is an inspiration to us all.
Juana Delia Avalos de Cayo |
Juana is 86 years old, a Peruvian American born in Arequipa, Peru and and living in the U.S. 17 years. I met Juana three years ago when her daughter, Elena Cayo became one of our team and now our Board. Juana is the mother of 10 children, 14 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She was the wife of Luis Cayo Munoz, who passed on one year ago. Her spirit, humor and commitment to others has served as an inspiration to us all. Juana will be returning to Peru this summer and we will miss her dearly. A party just is not a party without her!! Abrazos y besos Juana, from all the team!

| Team Peru y los Gringos
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The weather was great and the spirit was greater for the May Human Race. A big thank you to those who supported the team through donations and the team for showing up. We want to especially thank all of you pictured to the left who came from Hayward and San Jose to participate. Total raised was $706. Not bad, for a first year. Also a special thanks to Lee Oberg, and Teri Smith and Paula Antaki who are not in this picture. I hear there were some Brazilians that showed up for us too! Go team Brazil! This is an event that we will build on in the future. Thank you donors, runners and walkers!
| News from Chincha Center, Peru
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our speech therapist in Chincha, Jenny, is a mother of 8 children and physically challenged herself from birth. She is also a miracle worker. Jenny is pictured to the right, working with two children and their mother. Her recent e-mail informed us that she is now holding classes for parents on speech disorders at our Center and they are being well attended. Thank you to all the therapists that work so hard there, the mayor, Senor Emilio del Solar Salazar, for his collaboration in financing these professionals salaries, and our angel Rosa, the social worker who never stops working. |
| What your generosity has done
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In addition, to the money coming in from the Human Race, we would like to acknowlege our donors over the past two months. We now have enough to write the curriculum for our planned music program and buy the basic instruments while we pursue grants and additional funds for the teachers salaries and other necessities.
Thank you to Reverand Angela Geary of the Center for Spiritual Living, Scott Crossen, Pam Endsley, Angela Navarette, Cindy Quatro, Renu Joy, Emerson Periott, Rotary of Santa Cruz, and to Annabelle Smith and Gary Green for their support of our African students lunch program. You made it happen!!
