Greeting's From The East
Lyman S. Robertson Jr. Worshipful Master 517-499-3330
Dear ,
Every month I become more and more amazed at how large the Masonic family truly is. Even more so, I am in awe of how awesome it is too. Here are just a few examples of things that have happened to me recently. Take them as encouragement to reach out and shake a hand. Or better yet, lend one.
Traveling with my family to Florida over spring break I had the pleasure of going through security with a group of 6 which included a double wide stroller, two 4 year olds and two 6 year olds. At the moment where most people stress out and wonder if they will be asked to "step over here" being chosen as the "random" passenger for a more thorough search (which I almost always am) I instead was asked "Are you a traveling man?". And upon replying "why yes I am and I currently enjoying a year in the East" the security guard handed me back my families documents, extended his hand and greeted me as a Brother Mason.
While attending a conference in Detroit I happened across another Brother from the Zion Lodge in Detroit. Despite his old age and his need to use a walker, this Brother walked with a "Light" and happy grace that many others at the conference didn't. I had a very nice lunch with Brother Bill and look forward to the conference next year!
Most recently I had a call on my cell phone from Gardnerville, Nevada that ended before I could answer it and there was no message left. Typically I don't put much thought into it but this time I decided to call the number back after a little while and see who it was. The woman on the other end was the Treasurer for Esther #3 Order of the Eastern Star. She was trying to locate the Chapter from which a lady who had very recently passed away was from. All she knew was that it was Chapter #66. The recently deceased woman had mentioned before passing that there no one in her family left that she felt cared about her. Determined to find the woman's OES Chapter, she was calling any contact she could find from a state that had a Chapter #66. Seeing that I was the WM in a temple where Fern Leaf #66 meets, she gave me a call. By the time I reached her she had already found the #66 she was looking for which turned out to be in California and got the word to them that their Sister had departed for the heavens.
Does hearing these stories, especially the last one, make you smile with pride that you belong to an organization with kind and caring people such as the people I've had the pleasure to meet? Look around you as you travel be it across the city or across the country. Look for the chances to introduce yourself to Brothers and Sisters and share the Light that you've been given. I believe us all to be a part of the "coming Light" that is referenced in the apron presentation of the EA degree. I also believe that there is not only knowledge contained within that Light but also further examples of the Jewels of a Master Mason. Examples that we should all strive to be in our daily walk. Walk Light Brothers!
Fraternally,
Lyman S. Robertson Jr. Worshipful Master |

A MASON AND A MAN
Brother, Masonry means much more Than a wearing of a pin, Or carrying a paid up dues receipt So that the Lodge will let you in.
You can wear an emblem in your coat, From your finger flash a ring, But if you are not sincere at heart This doesn't mean a thing. It is merely an outward sign To show the world that you belong, To that great fraternal brotherhood That teaches right from wrong. What really counts lies buried deep Within the human breast, Till Masonic teaching brings it out And puts it to the test. If you practice out of Lodge The things you learn within, Be just and upright to yourself And to your fellowmen. Console a brother when he's sick, Assist him when in need, Without a thought of personal reward For any act or deed. Walk and act in such a way The world without will see, That only the best can meet the test Laid down by Masonry. Be always faithful to your trust And do the best you can, Then you can proudly tell the world You're a Mason and a man.
