Greeting's From The East

Dear ,

Indeed it was good to dwell together in unity this last month with Brethren from not only Jackson #17 but many other lodges from in and around Jackson county! We are starting to see a resurgence in lodge visitations and the extending of a hand from one lodge to another to assist in degree work. Truly the speculative work of a well honed trowel!

Our month began with a visit to Excelsior Lodge #116 in Grass Lake for their regular communication. As with our other visitations, our Brothers showed up in big numbers once again proving to me that their zeal for the craft and for dwelling in harmony with their brothers is very important to them. I am very lucky to be stationed in the East and observe the awesome sight! Our regular communication was again, well attended and had visitors from around the county and 2 from Grand Lodge!

This month's degree night consisted of Raising 3 Brothers to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. Again I was in awe at the turnout for the degree from not just our own lodge, but from around the county. 37 Brothers in all including 4 Worshipful Masters and 1 Grand Lodge Officer! It makes me proud of our fraternity to see such support and to assist in what is truly the beginning of our newly made Master Mason's journey in the Craft. Next month, we begin 3 EA degrees of the 5 we have currently awaiting initiation. I believe that all these newly made Brothers and steady flow of incoming petitions is due to the positive things we as individuals do around the workplace, community  and amongst friends.

In this next month we have the opportunity to do a few positive things for ourselves as well. Our temple will be rededicated by Officers from the Grand Lodge of Michigan. I personally have not seen a dedication done but I can only imagine how powerful and moving it will be. I personally see it as a chance to rededicate myself as well to the Craft and to the further transformation of myself towards that perfect ashlar. I urge and hope to see many of you there to be a part of this very special evening!

Fraternally,

Lyman S. Robertson Jr.

Worshipful Master

In this day and age seldom are we presented with an opportunity to put into practice the obligations that we solemnly swore to uphold.  Sure, there may be a chance to help a Brother stranded along the highway or contribute to a food bank.  Few opportunities, however, are life and death.  This was not the case a century and a half ago.  The War Between the States had just begun.  Lodges and Grand Lodges were deeply troubled with the prospect of a war pitting Brother against Brother.  Members of a Lodge in Missouri found themselves divided. Some Brothers supported the Union and some supported the Confederacy.  When it was obvious that it was impossible for them to dwell in peace and harmony they passed a resolution to surrender their charter and jewels to the Grand Lodge. Many a Lodge and Grand Lodge wrestled with the specter of this conflict.   Throughout the first half of the war more than one Lodge and Grand Lodge held out hope that the tenants of the Craft would lead to a peace and harmony and the war would end.

We all have heard or read of the interactions of Brothers during the battles of this tragic war.  One fact that I found interesting was the percentage of men that were members of our Craft.  The author of "The Better Angels of Our Nature" researched the records of Grand Lodges from 1858 to determine how many men from each state were Freemasons.  These records were presented at a national convention of Grand Lodges in 1859.  This convention, held in Chicago, explored the concept of forming a national organization. The convention failed to achieve its goal however the records remain.  The United States census of 1860 provides the population of men for each state.  The percentages Freemasons by state ranged from a low of 2% to a high of 14% with an average of 5%.  Approximately 165,000 troops met at the Battle of Gettysburg.  Of these 8,300 could have been Freemasons. For every 20 men 1 was a Freemason.  In Michigan today there are approximately 40,000 Freemasons, 1% of the male population.

I'll describe several thought provoking interactions in future Trestleboards.

A fact to ponder:

Today 1% of the male population of Michigan

are members of our Craft.

One Freemason in every one hundred men.

The average age of the citizens of Michigan is 39.

I am told the average age of Freemasons in Michigan is 69.

When Are You A Mason?

Wilbur D. Nesbit

When are you a Mason?

When you go to Lodge
If there is a meeting
That you cannot dodge?
When you wear your button?
When still up you climb?
The way to be a Mason
Is to be one all the time.

When are you a Mason?
When there's fun and feast,
Or when you can bolster
With a word at least
Some poor devil's spirits!
The real help you give.
The way to be a Mason
Is to be one as you live.

When are you a Mason?
When some gossip spreads
Of another brother,
Are you the one who heads
Off the hurtful babble,
And helps make things right?
The way to be a Mason
Is to be one day and night.

When are you a Mason?
Brother, you and I
Can make great the Order
As the days go by,
Through each word and action,
Through each song and smile:
The way to be a Mason

Is to be one all the while!

While we did get some money from the bodies and individuals, it was only $7,400.00 and we still owe more than $72,600.00

PLEASE, contribute as liberally as you can without material injury to yourself or family!

Thank you!
