Dear ,

"I see you've traveled some"

One of the benefits of being a member of the world's largest and oldest fraternity is that no mater where we go, around town, around the state, around the country or around the world, when we least expect it, we meet a Brother.

In my relatively short Masonic journey I have been greeted several times by Brothers as I traveled around our great country.

I had just arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina for a trade show. The weather was hot and humid. I was tired from a flight and a cab ride with several large boxes of show supplies.   As I stood in the lobby of the hotel the bell captain approached me saying "I can see you have had a nasty blow to your forehead". He held out his hand and pointed to my Scottish Rite ball cap. We talked for a few minutes and parted. We didn't exchange names but it really wasn't necessary. We knew each other. We were Brothers.

My wife, granddaughter and I were waiting for the elevator to ride to the top of the observation tower on the city hall in Philadelphia (it's across the street from the Masonic Temple). The cornerstone was laid in 1872. A 27 ton statue of William Penn tops the 547 foot tall building. The door of the four passenger elevator opened and three tourists came out. As the operator came out he looked straight at me and said "I am glad to meet you, Hiram". Before I could respond he turned and went down some stairs and was gone.

Last Spring my family and I were in a local cemetery for the service for my sister-in-law. As I walked behind my car one of the funeral directors said "Hello Hiram" and pointed to the Square and Compasses on the back of my car.

This Summer I was checking into a Detroit area hotel and as I signed the registration form the clerk said "I see you're a traveling man too".

In each encounter few words were spoken but the warm, wonderful feeling of those meetings still lingers.

While growing up in Birmingham, Michigan my parents listened to a short radio show that was broadcast around noon each weekday. The radio personality was Bud Guest. I might have known that his father was a famous poet but I didn't know he was a Mason. Edgar A Guest was a member of Ashlar Lodge 91 in Detroit. It is said that he wrote a poem a day for 40 years. Hope you enjoy this poem as much as I did.

I See You've Travelled Some

by: Edgar A. Guest

Wherever you may chance to be - wherever you may roam,
Far away in foreign lands; or just at home sweet home;
It always gives you pleasure, it makes your heart strings hum
    Just to hear
    The words of cheer,
    "I see you've travelled some."

When you get a brother's greeting, and he takes you by the hand,
It thrills you with a feeling that you cannot understand,
You feel that bond of brotherhood, that tie that's sure to come
    When you hear him say
    In a friendly way
    "I see you've travelled some."

And if you are a stranger, in strange lands all alone
If fate has left you stranded, dead broke and far from home,
Oh, it's a grand and glorious feeling, it thrills you; makes you numb,
When he says with a grip
    Of fellowship,
    "I see you've travelled some."

And when your final summons comes, to take a last long trip,
Adorned with Lambskin Apron White and gems of fellowship -
The Tiler at the Golden Gate, with Square and Level and Plumb
    Will size up your pin
    And say "Walk In:
    I see you've travelled some."

None to report.

Commander's Corner

Greetings Sir Knights and Ladies,

On October 24th Jackson Commandery No 9 knighted Sir Knight Kevin Davis.  Kevin has had his father's sword for many years, but it was an honor to present it to him as a new knight.  It is a special feeling to carry a father's sword, or the sword of a relative or old friend who has gone before.  In addition to all of the nostalgia related to using that sword and the warm thought that the person is with you in some small way, the sword is presented to you with a new lesson, a new purpose, and it becomes your own.  Thank you to all Sir Knights who devoted time and energy in making sure that his knighting was a memorable experience.  For those who stepped in to fill in the roles of Senior and Junior Warden on short notice, thank you for serving.  Thank you Lady JoAnne for repairing the triangle cloth, it looked great.

Looking forward to November 7th, we are anticipating a wonderful Inspection Day.  Please get your reservations into Sir Knight Recorder Mike Hicks as we will be having a catered dinner/reception following inspection.  Come out and support our candidate on inspection day, while we all enjoy the atmosphere of inspection day, the greatest impact on the candidate is to see all of the knights there for his experience.

As a parting thought, I encourage you to remember the history that many prominent Masons and Knights Templar have played in making our country free.  In concluding the ceremony of a knighting, the discussion of the United States Flag is saved for last, I think as a lasting impression to the importance of constitutional government and freedom.  November 11th is Veteran's Day and we wish to thank the veterans of Jackson Commandery No. 9, as well as all veterans for their service and self sacrifice to ensure the liberty and freedom that our beloved flag represents.

Fraternally,

Adam Wygant

Eminent Commander
