Evictions Are Not Pretty
Thursday evening at about 3AM, I was awakened by the sounds of an eviction. The tenant had received numerous warnings over the last few years. Yes, years. He had slyly and effectively evaded eviction with his smile, little boy voice, and the way he would put his tiny, little arms around Theresa's neck which resulted in numerous delays, exceptions, and alot of crumbling by the co-owner of our master bedroom bed.
Despite recently turning seven years old, our youngest, and last son, Ryan had continued his late night migrations into our bedroom. The previous tenants, (being his older brothers, Troy and Raymond) and I realized Ryan's contract for, "late night crawl-ins" was repeatedly extended beyond what they had enjoyed. I decided to approach Theresa once again on the subject. "Honey, pretty soon Ryan will be keeping his car keys on our side table. I think he is ready to stay in his own bed...the entire evening". As usual, I thought I was being pretty funny, as I continued making jokes about our situation. That is when Theresa admitted, "It's really not about Ryan being ready...I don't know if I am ready".
Wow. Kind of killed my joke right there. I knew when I met and ultimately married Theresa the highest priority for her was her family. Part Chinese culture, part family beliefs, all really good stuff. That is why a few nights later, I was surprised to be awakened by her telling Ryan he could no longer climb into our bed. Thank goodness the eviction process had begun! Little Ryan pleaded repeatedly but to Theresa's credit, she remained firm.
As difficult as it was for Ryan to grasp the concept of sleeping in his own bed the entire night, I knew it was even harder on Theresa. I could tell in her voice it was very difficult for her to deny her little boy's pleas. She told him he could only climb into our bed after six am. It was yet another one of those milestones in life that sneaks up on you.
After Ryan realized the end of his occupancy was up, I walked him to his bedroom. After placing him on his bed, I turned the clock away from his sight so the room would be darker, allowing him to fall back to sleep. Being as stubborn as he is, (mom's side of the family) he insisted the clock face him. "Mom said I could come in after six". As I turned the clock towards him the greenish glow of the clock illuminated his pouty little face as he sat straight up in his bed holding his favorite stuffed bear he calls, "Army Bear." He then said emphatically, "I am going to sit right here until six". I then smiled as I looked at the clock and noticed the time was only 3:10 in the morning. I knew he would be asleep in minutes.
As I prepared to close the door, I paused to look at him again. Ryan continued staring intently at the clock. His little determined face immersed in the green glow while his left arm was holding that darn bear. Though I had pleaded for the eviction, I now wondered for the first time, if I was really ready. It was the end of a chapter in our lives that arrived much too quickly. I almost wish he knew a pretty good lawyer that could somehow delay this travesty of justice...
Theresa and I wish you a great week,
