The Dreaded ... "World's Largest Pineapple Maze"
Or ... Our kids are really watching us...
There are certain things we tend to emphasize in our home. It is part of our continuing adventure of turning our three boys into men. Most of the usual stuff. Things all our kids learn at elementary school, like play fair, tell the truth, and take responsibility for your actions. There is another area we hit pretty hard. Never quit. They probably get tired of hearing me say that so often. I suspect I feel so strongly about this character trait from training so many police officers. Quitting in a fight when your a cop could likely result in you being carried by eight of your closest fellow officers, with taps playing in the background. Not a good thing.
So naturally, our boys have been told repeatedly that despite the challenges they face, they are never to quit. Rough season in sports, no quitting, keep your word. Finish it out. At the end of the season you can re-evaluate. In the meantime, deal with it and keep working hard. The concept sounds great tell you as the father are actually caught quitting by your children.
It came to light again this past week that our children are always watching and learning from every move we make. This past week Ryan, our seven year old son was riding his tricycle around the driveway trying to dodge me as he yelled, "I don't want to go to soccer practice". After missing him twice, I timed it perfectly as I snatched him out of his tricycle seat so quickly he was unable to even hold on to the handlebars. It was like Maverick being ejected from his F-14 Tomcat. I smiled to myself, as I carried his little body to the open door of our car like a football where his two older brothers were waiting.
At the crowning moment of my success, I announced proudly, "Shay boys never quit, let's get to practice!" I then prepared to toss Ryan into his booster car seat. Moments before leaving my fingertips, he yelled out in a very clear and authoritative voice, "You quit dad. You quit on the pineapple maze". Ow that hurts. I must have let my shoulders slump as I looked at Troy and Raymond who were already sitting in the car. They both looked directly at me and nodded their heads up and down in unison like the green little aliens in Toy Story as they said together, "He's right dad. You did quit".
I first tried evasion, as I wondered how they all so clearly remembered my lapse in judgement. Ryan was only about four years old when that happened. Our Poway schools have done too good of a job on them. Ryan has a brain like an elephant. He never forgets anything! If the truth be known, we were at the worlds largest pineapple maze in Hawaii a few years ago. It was hot, humid and it was such a dumb maze that I kept trying to distract them by talking about the pineapple ice cream for sale in the gift shop.
No such luck. It wasn't working. They still wanted to do it. We tried it for a little while and I decided we should quit. It was a crummy maze. I still remember a cautionary look from Theresa when I spoke those words. I hate the fact wives are frequently right. I admit I had been up late the previous evening with my father in law, "Jimmy" who had been purchasing Pina Coladas with rum floats and I was moving a bit slow. I buckled. I failed. I remember in the heat one of the moment I mistakenly thought fresh pineapple ice cream would resolve their persistence to do the dumb maze and also erase their memory.
No such luck. I accept the responsibility of making a bad decision. I am hoping my bad decision may help them someday when they have kids of their own, or are studying for a final and it is late at night or hopefully not, but they are in a fight, and they remember the dreaded pineapple maze and somehow they find the strength to push on and dig a little deeper. I hope they never quit.
Have a great week,

Two "Mole Stories" this week...
Some good natured kids at Oak Valley MIddle School wanted to wish one of their classmates a, "Happy Birthday" by bringing a single balloon and singing her happy birthday at lunch. "Not so fast" per the teachers..."Do it again and you will be in Big Trouble"! Wow... There must be more to this reader's tip, or our school system is in need of a sense of humor.
The following picture is what 18th Birthday Boy...OK Young Man, Kevin Koch found happened to his prized truck overnight. Good thing he was not parked at Oak Valley Middle School.... Happy birthday Kevin!
